I was on a 2 week tour of Japan and made a large effort to travel down from Hiroshima to this museum and it was really worth it. If travelling down from the mid / north part of Japan I suggest an over night stop in Kagoshima and then getting the coach from Kagoshima airport round to Kanoya.
The 4 engined Emily float plane is the real highlight here and it is the first aircraft you see upon approach, what a sight! Most of the aircraft are outside and unfortunately and most are looking good externally. The Zero is indoors and looks fantastic. The Kamikaze exhibition is very interesting and moving. You can sit in the nose section of a Neptune and also a license built Sea King helicopter. The displays are all in Japanese and no English guide book is available, however the staff are really friendly and speak some English which is enough to help. They were kind enough to show me the English version of the JMSDF aviation history video in the theatre.
If you are interested in historic aviation from WW2 and into the post war years then you simply MUST visit this museum! Seeing the Emily floatplane alone is worth the trip. Some other highlights being the Japanese versions of Neptunes (1 piston, 1 turbo prop), Tracker, C47, Beech 18 and the impressive Shinmeiwa US-1 seaplane.

A small beach area with torii overlooking Kinko Bay. Very picturesque. Shire is at the top a very small rocky outcropping steps and short rope climb to reach. If the tide is out you can get amazing sunset shots Very peaceful and inspirational. Sitting on the beach good for meditation. Local families also use the area to swim (June-September)

I have been here a few times. The cafe near the entrance is nice and has a nice rose (bara) curry that is pink-ish and actually is really good. The rose garden is nice when it is blooming but in any other season it is pretty boring. Every year there is a bit of a festival around when they are blooming.
They also have some days where they light it up at night, and days dedicated to couples with discounts on entry fees. It's a pretty place to go if you just want to take a stroll around some nice flowers. They also sell rose bushes if you are inclined to buy one.

This is a really majestic place. The entrance has a nice garden with sakura trees (you can enjoy blossoming in spring), a beautiful stone memorial with its own history and a shallow river with many ancient looking carps (koi). The stroll to the tomb of first emperor's parents is quite short and easy. The park around is very beautiful and relaxing. Unfortunately it is not allowing to reach the tomb itself (even for imperial family) but the atmosphere and nature around are definitely worth coming here.

Small neighbourhood park,Kozuka Park with a Memorial to the WW2 Kamakazie Pilots who flew from Kanoya Air Base (combine with a visit to the air base museum as there is nothing else to see at this park sight, a 15 min walk from Base museum walk on sidewalk west along Hwy 269 Turn lt when coming out of air force base museum road .Walk is about 8 blocks then turn rt at the corner(Subaru dealership) that says Hwy 550, the park is a short way up on your left near Nishiharadai Elementary School),
Situated at the top of a small hill at the edge of the park takes about 10 minutes to see.Great for those interested in WW2 History. The yearly memorial service to which anyone is invited is very moving. Held in the morning around 9-10am the first Saturday in April. At the service we attended there were about 8 Kamakazie pilots still living. Those who died are represented by their families in a chrysanthemum laying ceremony. A very moving service even if you do not understand Japanese.
