10 Things to Do in Idstein That You Shouldn't Miss

October 1, 2017 Deane Carmody

Idstein (German pronunciation: [ˈʔɪtʃtaɪn]) is a town of about 25,000 inhabitants in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. Because of its well preserved historical Altstadt (Old Town) it is part of the Deutsche Fachwerkstraße (German Timber-Frame Road), connecting towns with fire fachwerk buildings and houses. In 2002, the town hosted the 42nd Hessentag state festival.

Hexenturm

Reviewed By SROVirginia - Virginia

This is not the tallest tower in the world, but if you like narrow winding steps with -- basically -- a ladder at the top, then this tower is for you. The lower bits date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Nice views of Idstein once you reach the top. After you've enjoyed the view, do as the locals do and climb down backwards, at least until you reach the wider steps at mid-tower level. And save the wine/beer until after you've done the tower. Young children are unable to climb some of the upper stairs. Closed Mondays; closes for two hours at lunchtime on other days. Well worth a pop-in, to get your heart racing.

1888 Nerobergbahn Funicular

This cable car ride provides visitors with a picturesque view of the town of Wiesbaden.

Reviewed By Sagri2013 - Indianapolis, Indiana

Opened in 1888, the Neroberg Mountain Railway, one of the few funiculars with water propulsion and a true engineering accomplishment, gave us a wonderful experience. Though the ride was of about 4 minutes, the ingenious technique still enthuses the passengers today, as it had done in the former times. Taking us to 245 meters above sea level it provided an amazing view of the Panorama of Wiesbaden and the surroundings. One of the city's most popular leisure-time destinations, the two carriages, about 50 passengers in each, have moved up and down the Neroberg Mountain at 7.3 kilometers per hour. It transports its passengers, estimated 300,000 per year, up and down every 15 minutes. It is the oldest water ballast-driven cog-and-rack railway in Germany. A trip on it made us forget today´s hectic pace. It is like a journey into the past. The kids loved the short trip. Snacks are available at the top. At the time of our visit, wedding celebrations were going on thus providing a romantic relaxation for the participants.

Visited this zoo many times. One of our favorites with nice play areas and interesting animals in nice setting. Great for young kids and families. Kids love feeding the goats, elephants and lamas. Take your own carrots rather than buying them there. Also, take your own picnic. Entry fee a little expensive without yearly pass.

Golfpark Idstein

The golf project on approximately 160 hectares is the largest golf oasis in the Rhine-main area near Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. The 36 - hole Golfpark Idstein with each international par 72 was designed and built by well-known golf experts. Both golf courses have received a very high course rating grades due to their difficulty and are out for guests near and far at the weekly open tournaments very popular. The 18-hole South course "Gut Henriettenthal" in Idstein Wörsdorf is playable since 1989, 18-hole North course "Golden Ground" in Idstein-Waldorf since the year 2001. The two championship golf courses stand out especially due to the natural construction in varied, attractive scenic surroundings

The Tournesol is a nice place for sauna and swimming. The sauna area is quite big with at least 5 different saunas. What I don't like is that there is a substantial amount of dirt and grime literally everywhere. At similar places they clean continuously here they don't. Another point: it is often impossible to get a locker. Total disaster. For the quite pricey admission only average.
