Not a technically challenging walk, but tough in places. In good weather this is an excellent morning hike giving spectacular views. Three hours up, tough in places, some rope climbs. Walkers with knee issues would do well to exercise caution coming down the mountain, as the scree can be very loose.
Expect to spend 5 hours without being strenuous.

The station with background of Kaimondake volcano is the southernmost ralway line with Tamatebako, three times a day. The electric assisted bicycle can be rent to Ryugu shrine. Good plan of matching the tram will be careful. It is hard going by bicycle from Ibusuki station to Oyama station due to gradient of slope step.

This is a nice little oceanside shrine with a good view of the surrounding landscape and a unique custom of writing wishes or prayers on seashells.
The walk down to the water and over the volcanic rock is picturesque and interesting.
Definitely worth a casual visit.

I think that this place was actually my favorite place in Ibusuki.
You can catch the bus that will drop you right at the doorstep of this amazing place. It costs about 620 yen to enter, but totally worth it, in my opinion. Operating times are 09:00 to 17:00. As far as I know, the last bus to the station leaves at about 17:00 so beware of that.
Put on your walking shoes and get ready to walk about 3 km around this park. Or if you're traveling with a child, you may rent a "golf" cart for 500 yen per hour. They ask you for a driver's license, which they copy and return to you right away. There is also a shuttle bus (free), that leaves every 40 minutes. So with all these options, there is something for everyone!
There are about half a million of plants, displaying over 2,400 different kinds of species which are not only from Japan, but all parts of the world. It is truly amazing for anyone that appreciates nature.
Best times to go are spring and anytime in December due to the Christmas illuminations (at which point they close a little bit later).
There used to be a restaurant and a cafe but they were both closed so if you're going to be hungry, bring snacks. All you can find is a souvenir shop. There is baby feeding room in the event you need to breastfeed or change your child's diapers.

I took my mom here when she came to visit me because I did this myself and loved it. I found a lot of pretty beach glass, and pumice stones that were orange (from Sakurajima just north in the middle of the bay).
Note: If you show up without checking online for the time when the sandbar is present you will have wasted a trip. The site is in Japanese, so it could be tricky for some to understand. There is a sign in front of where the sandbar appears that says when it will be "open". However, if you plan it right, the sandbar will seemingly appear out of the ocean and you can walk across. Just be aware that the sandbar does disappear and that if you get stuck on the island you will be stuck there for the night! Play it safe!
The first time I came I had no idea where to park. I suggest at the park, the closer to the beach the better. It's a bit of a walk, and then you have to walk across the sand bar. Bring sun protection and water as there is no shade.

If you arrive at the hotel early take time to visit the museum. They have headsets and the explanations are extensive. The review of the pottery on the first floor goes on for a little it too long, but does give a very good understanding of the development of the pieces exhibited. On the second floor there is a good display of the Satsuma history in written articles, clothing, art works and wood block prints. There is also a good display of Chinese pottery (Minq and Qing dynasties)
The English explanations will last a good 2 hours and if you have time, definitely worth it to help you understand the period under display.
If you are staying at the hotel there is a discount against the price of Yen 1500 of Yen 500

Small shrine at Cape Nagasakibana look out. A nice detour on your way, but not worthy as a destination in itself. Read about the relationship between local turtles and fishermen in the area, write a wish on sea shells. Spend 15 - 20 mins
