10 Things to Do in Hoorn That You Shouldn't Miss
Hoorn [ˈɦoːr(ə)n] ( listen) is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located on the Markermeer, 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of Amsterdam, and acquired city rights in 1357. Hoorn had a population of 72,707 in 2017. The area of the municipality is 53.25 km (20.56 sq mi) of which 33.00 km (12.74 sq mi) consists of water, mainly the Markermeer. The municipality consists of the following villages and/or districts: Blokker, Hoorn, Zwaag, and parts of Bangert and De Hulk.

Between the historic towns of Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen steamtrams meander from village to village across the Westfrisian countryside and a historic steamer with a fantastic saloon-deck sails along the coast of lake IJsselmeer.

On my 12th trip to this fine country, I made the morning trip to Hoorn for the Stoomtram.
Absolutely blown away at how great of an experience it was.
Took "Train #6" which was a line of mostly wooden carriages in excellent condition, with open viewing platforms on the end of each married-couple/ set of cars. Some of the cars were upholstered in red velvet and all were as if they were new.
The staff were so pleasant and the stops along the way just added to the old-time feel that was upheld throughout. Stations turned museums and even a vintage Peugeot that followed us part of the way.
Passed tulip fields, farms, villages, windmills and scenes of countryside life before ending in the great little town of Medemblik; where you can wander for a bit before getting on the Steamliner/ Boat. Medemblik has a rich sailing history, a nice church, full marina, an awesome castle/ fortification, and though I didn't have time for it because of the itinerary I (with no regret) chose, a nice walking street.
The steam boat trip was really nice too. I highly recommend this combo/ circuit they offer. So great to be on the water with other modern and vintage ships. Another step back in time and a physical link to the country's seafaring history. The boat "Freisland" was very nice in itself too. A good cafe and plenty of space. Just remember to dress in layers for the boat.
After about an hour on the water, you arrive in Enkhuizen's Zuiderzeemuseum's dock. I decided to get off here. This living museum is so wonderful. Restored homes and villages with working shoppes, fresh smoked fish on offer and all types of activities and/ or places to get lost and wander through.
Enkhuizen town is a trip in itself as well. One of the biggest and best surprises for me of the outing. Such a beautiful, friendly and nice town.
Should also be noted that Hoorn has a wonderful amount of sites, especially for those interested in the VOC/ Dutch East-India Company.
All is an easy day-trip from Amsterdam, too. Using the train system/ NS, everything is seamlessly simple.
I can't recommend this experience enough.

This small museum offers paintings by old masters in charming historic period rooms from the 17th and 18th century.I enjoyed the various historic interiors and the small garden.
In 2005 17th century oil-paintings and silverware were stolen from the museum and some paintings were returned after 11 years when they turned up in Kiev,Ukraine.
The statue of Jan Pieterzoon Coen (founder of the Dutch East Indies colony)in front of the museum has been updated with a plaque remembering his cruel oppresion of the natives of the Indonesian Banda Islands during his reign.

The Halve Maen is the name of a ship. It translates into: 'half moon'. You can ride the boat with advance bought tickets (see the webshop) or sometimes on the day itself if not everyone shows up. The boat ride is a seasonal experience (April-October) and it sometimes travels further on 'missions'. The ride is about 45 minutes.

In 1453 there was a Roman Catholic wooden chapel wich was replaced in 1519 by a stone&-brick structure;the beginning of the present Protestant church dating from 1616.Today a cultural centre for music Performances this attractive 17th century building no longer has a religious function.As the Grote Kerk Hoorn was rebuild in the 19th century this is the oldest of the several churches in Hoorn.I enjoyed the historical architecture of the church,it has a white-washed interior.

It is a uniquely-shaped centuries old structure tower. Though it could have any other purpose before to watch the harbor for the coming in and out of boats, today it is well utilized as a restaurant. Great place and convenient to anyone.

In the 19th century it was no longer the monopoly of the Protestant church to build new churches.Koepelkerk was build in 1882 by architect AC Bleys and renovated 1990-1993.
During the day the "stiltecentrum" offers a glimse of the ornate interior.I enjoyed seeing the cupola from various point in the town.

It's fun for everyone to watch the cheese carriers and it is in a pretty setting (although it has a bloody history - read about the square in a guide book to see what I mean). The town of Hoorn is a really pretty little place. If you find yourself here for a day or so, you'll enjoy it.

The street signs towards the entrance of this library building could be a bit more clear, but it is a nice library to sit down, relax and read something. And there is a cafetaria inside the library serving coffee, tea and more.
