We always try to find historic areas in Japan, so while on Kyushu island we visited two streets in Mamedamachi that were recommended by guide books. Unfortunately there is very little traditional feeling to these two streets anymore. They are now fully occupied by tourist shops ( yes, there are some nice pottery shops). In fact, if we hadn't been told it would be hard to recognise this was an historic area. If you have been to Tsumago or even Gion in Kyoto, this is not worth seeking out.

We went on a Sunday morning and it was dead quiet. We chose the self tour and the factory was closed so none of the machinery were running. It was a nice detour, but I don't think it was worth the trip. Luckily Mamedamachi Shopping Street was worth stopping at Hita for.
The main reason we went was to replace a Sapporo Beer glass that we broke that we purchased in Sapporo Beer Factory Hokkaido :)

Worth a special trip. This picturesque village is dedicated to creating wonderful craft pottery using medieval techniques. Watch how they prepare the clay by pulverizing it with water powered hammers.

The hotel I stayed was right beside the river. Luckily, we had a very big window right towards the river, too. Therefore, we could fully appreciate the sunset and the scenery. It is really hard to imagine that as highly developed as Japan is, they still preserve so many marvelous natural beauties.
I seized the chance to jog along the river in the morning, which was fun, too. Beside the river, there were also two small parks.

This has once been one of the 3 biggest and well-reputed private school in Japan. At most, they once had 200+ students. The owner was a very famous local scholar and quite a few of his family members were very erudite. However, I was a bit frustrated that all the introductions were written only in Japanese.

There are two shops at the entrance, one for souvenirs and one for ice cream. Besides traditional flavored like blueberry and vanilla, they also offer wine-flavor. If it were not a very cold winter, I would definitely have tried it.
As to the museum, I'd appreciate everything much more if there could be English or Chinese introductions.
