The Dry dock is still in use. It can be filled with water, the ship can sail in and than the dock is emptied. Very inspiring to walk trough the dock and the water ways. Guided tours available. Bad weather is no problem!

The National Fire Brigade Museum of the Netherlands shows, as part of the foundation National Security Institute (NVI = Nationaal Veiligheidsinstituut), the history of the fire brigade, not only as a technical story but also its culture and social history over more than four hundred years, from 1550 until today. The National Fire Brigade Museum housed in two former naval buildings, the coopers shop (barrel factory) and the great store's room, dating from the 18th century. In our exhibition area of approx. 3,000 m² we show the historical extinguishing equipment, starting with simple leather buckets, to the modern fire trucks of the last century.
The Brandweermuseum has a lot of old cars inside. The museum is quite interactive and nice for kids too. The oldest exposition is from the time that buckets were used. 2 hours must be kept for a visit, nice for a rainy day!

Zr. Ms. Buffel (HW 12, A 884) is a Dutch ironclad built by the British shipyard Napier & Sons from Glasgow, Scotland (July 23, 1868). After having serviced a period as a lodging-and storage ship De Buffel now is a museum ship. The Buffalo is a museum ship, worthwhile for anyone visiting it. Who goes on board, steps more than 145 years back in time. De Buffel is located at the Koningskade 2 Hellevoetsluis

Kids will like the ship too. If you come and visit you'll be surprised seeing a prison, living room, kitchen, dining room and sleeping rooms on board. And even more!
Take an hour or 2 to see all the beautiful things. On the same quay you'll find a dry dock (Jan Blanken), light ship (Noordhinder) and A.M.S. (Adjutant Mine Sweeper) de Bernisse.

It has a parking for cars, you can eat and drink something and there are nice expositions inside the building. Staff is very friendly.
Outside you'll find a mix of history, war, games (digging for bones, playing golf and more).
Give your kids clothes for playing outside.

Once an identification mark in the North Sea, helping seamen to establish their position at sea while at the same time warning seamen of dangerous sand banks along Zeeland's coast". Due to modern navigational aids, the lightship is no longer active at sea and is now a museum ship located in the harbour of Hellevoetsluis.

You can visit the ship and it's worthwhile for an hour or two. Former marine officers will point out what the ship meant in former days. Staff is very friendly and helps you out with everything.
Nice for kids too!!

We went to Hellevoetsluis for the Vestingdagen (Steam Fair) and during our stay went to this Windmill. The views from the top are amazing and the little shop and cafe halfway up is full of interesting gifts and history.

Very good childrens play area which is convenient if you are staying at one of the two local resort/camping areas.
Good standard of food and drink which wasn't overly expensive, our 7 year old daughter loved it however would cater well for much younger and older children alike. Very good english spoken.
