The main attraction here seems to be the castle area at the top of the town. It is well maintained, contains a nice pousada, and a number of other structures. You need to arrive, however, before the afternoon lunch/siesta period when everything but the pousada is closed tight. There is a very friendly café across from the church that was a former pottery workshop.

Although we did not have a booking, the winery provided us with a brief tour as well as a tasting of their higher-end wines (12 Euros per person). Our guide was very informative and enthusiastic about the winery and their offerings. Not only is the winery beautiful, but the view of the walled city of Estremoz from their location is stunning. Several wines as well as their locally-produced gin are available for purchase. Unlike wineries in the US, you shouldn't just plan on stopping by for a taste--I'd definitely recommend making a booking to ensure availability!

Designed in accordance with the traditional architecture of the Alentejo region, this winery has put Estremoz on the map of the great wine regions, welcoming visitors from all over the world. The purpose is to discover the achievements of Joao Portugal Ramos, but on the way also discover the reasons for his passion for the Alentejo. A tour or a lunch offers the time and tranquility that are perfect for enjoying our wines and the local cuisine. With a shop, tasting room, lecture room, meeting room and dining room , Vila Santa offers a welcome to those wanting to discover, taste and take home wines that will leave a perfect memory of this region. Our five senses all come into play when we travel. Food and drink is part of many people’s tourist experience and the best way to truly grasp the terroir of a wine is to visit where it’s made. Vila Santa tour offers you a visit to the vineyards, the winery, and cellars, where the vinification process is explained to the visitors. You have the opportunity to choose between a wine tasting accompanied by regional cheeses and a selection of different appetizers according to the seasons products or a typical Alentejo lunch , “be a winemaker for a day” or take a cooking class, where culture, tradition and the character of our wines come in complete harmony, promising a unique and unforgettable experience . During harvest time it’s also possible to take part in grape picking and foot-trodding in old marble "lagares" (stone troughs).
Second time we've visited this winery and we enjoyed our second visit as much as our first. Sophia is an excellent guide and speaks very good English. The winery is very interesting and the tasting afterwards was excellent and relaxed. Depending on the tasting you have chosen you try a number of different wines, all very good quality, with bread, local cheese and their own olive oil as a delicious accompaniment.
You do need to book a tour in advance, although there is a wineshop open I don't think it would be possible to just turn up for a tour there and then unannounced.
I highly recommend Joao Portugal Ramos as a great place to visit in the Estremoz area. We will return I'm sure.

Herdade das Servas is a great place to visit. We were welcomed by an enthusiastic young lady that made us a tour to the winery and explained in great detail their wine making process.
We also did some wine tasting which was amazing, due to its high quality.

It is a place where Science and Technology break the walls of laboratories, coming in direction to the visitor. A place where it is possible to interact with the exposition; to touch, experiment, play and discover are a must through the entire visit. At the Centre for Live Science of Estremoz you will discover how the place where we all live works... Earth.
This attractive town with its cobbled streets and fine buildings are best viewed off the beaten track away from its somewhat non-descript central roundabout. Estremoz is best known for its marble and there is much evidence of marble works throughout, although it is somewhat spoiled by leaving huge, garish openings as the marble runs out, with all the attendant spoil.

It's a very unique entry to the old city part of Estremoz (Ess-tra-moss), Portugal. There is room for one medium to large car to go through, or two small/minis side by side (although you may find that you are nervous as heck if you meet someone at either the entry or exit point where it's narrower. There isn't a whole lot of room for walkers, bicyclists or scooters to pass in there, either.
The stone blocks are likely a limestone, although the weathering suggests a slightly harder stone. I didn't take the time to get up close and personal with the minerals in the stone, so it is all conjecture without my hand lens and a scratch stone. The portal is long enough that it gives you those hollow sounds as you either walk or drive slowly though it, and if a loud horn honks in their, hope that you have earplugs in or your windows closed!
This represents some of the post-Moorish architecture of the area, and is just one more small jewel in the crown of a unique little city, blessedly placed on the southwestern plains of Iberia.

Great to take a walk up from the centre to the castle and Pousada passing through this archway. Impressive steps below it, and a lovely walk provided you are good on your feet!

Entrance to the town of Estromoz, you might find yourself driving through here depending on your route into the town. Not really worth wandering around to find it, not much to see really!

We came across this marble columm by accident when driving round. we had just seen one in Vicosa and understood that was a pillory, so this is probably the same. Made of local marble it is quite attractive and worth a look.
