Chipping Campden is a small market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its elegant terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. ("Chipping" is from Old English cēping, "a market, a market-place"; the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)

Hidcote's "garden rooms" came first. They were developed over 30 years by Major Lawrence Johnston, an American naturalized as a British citizen, a Cambridge graduate and professional soldier (Boer War, WW I). After his mother bought this property in 1907, Johnston absorbed the latest in garden publications about the then-current Arts and Crafts style. He was also influenced by Gertrude Jekyll. He became a noted plant collector. He remained a voracious reader about Gardens. The rest is history.
Hidcote is one of the world's best known Gardens. In 1948, Johnston arranged its transfer to the UK National Trust and the RHS. Although still spectacular, the Gardens are being restored to their heyday of 1920-1940.
I can highly recommend visiting. And now I want to see Johnston's subsequent project, Serre de la Madone, on the French Riviera near Menton, where the climate helped with his war wounds.
NOTE: We enjoyed a quick soup and Sandwich at the casual cafe called Mrs, Winthrop's after Johnston's mother. It is in a converted outbuilding on the property.

For lack of a tour guide and in pouring rain, I bought the guidebook at the gift shop. "Kiftsgate Court Gardens, Three Generations of Women Gardeners," by Anne Chambers surprised me by being a first-person narrative, unusual in such guidebooks. Reading it felt like a personal tour. Mrs. Chambers is the third generation gardener here.
The garden still evolves over generations and circumstances and reflects differing tastes and personalities, a combination which may help explain its appeal. It is the work of three generations of talented, skilled, dedicated amateurs inspired by the life, then the legacy, of their neighbor Lawrence Johnston at Hidcote, and assisted by succeeding teams of gardeners. I can highly recommend a visit.

The Broadway Tower is a must see attraction but the surrounding area is as interesting and worth exploring with some attractive walks amongst stunning scenery with the Malvern Hills looming in the distance. Within the grounds of the Tower there is a cafe, nuclear bunker as well as a deer park. On the day we visited it was overcast and chilly but we still enjoyed spending time in and around the vicinity of the Broadway Tower.

This stately church, built in the 1400s, is the town's famous Perpendicular wool church, which can be seen from miles around.
Set in a beautiful Cotswolds town and has it self some real history. This is a old church that must be on your list. Great photo shots to be had and we were lucky enough to have the organist present and he offered to play...MoreWe are delighted to have contributed to the success of your Holiday.

We came across the Ernest Wilson memorial garden quite by chance! The High St in Chipping Camden can be a busy bustling place during the summer holiday season so this garden is a welcome and peaceful place to spend a short time. There is comprehensive information available about Ernest Wilson on a notice board and places to sit and relax. Most of the plants are labeled and overall the garden is well maintained.
There is no charge for admission but you are invited to make a donation which helps to maintain the garden. If you are interested in plants, then this is a must visit attraction.

The gallery at the guild is a co-operative of 28 Cotswold artists, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, woodturners, metalworkers, glass makers, textile artists and cabinet makers whose Exhibitions of work change every six weeks. The gallery is stewarded by its members and volunteers and is open daily. The gallery is on the ground floor of The Old Silk Mill in Chipping Campden which was once the home of C R Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft. Todays it is still home to Hart's Gold and Silversmiths as well as Caroline Richardson Jewellery and Campden Coffee Company.
We visited in March and there was a collective exhibition of various artists work with some of the artists in attendance. Good quality and reasonable prices although we did not make a purchase on this visit it was the kind of work we appreciate.

Arts & Crafts Museum
Interesting display of how a particular art movement was formed, developed further, relocated to Chipping Campden before finally settling at its current location, part of the beautiful surroundings of what used to be the wealthy estate of a local family. An interesting range of modern art and craft work to view, alongside explanations on how different artists and craftsmen and played their part in the formation of the original movement. Worth a visit.

A really lovely spot and if a clear day you can see for miles. Great for picnics and whilst we were there people were flying kites. We didn't have time to do any walking but if in the area I would go back as it is lovely countryside.

We like to visit Tourist Info Centres to find out about locations, events and other interesting things that we may have missed in our planning.
Pat and another lady were very helpful in providing us with friendly advice and places of interest including some nice cafes. Lots of leaflets, maps and books available to help us plan our days out. This is a very small centre in an old stone building, I do not think you could get a pram or wheelchair inside, even someone with suitcases may struggle.
Thank you.
