Whilst driving the WAW, we were looking for somewhere to stop for a picnic, we stumbled across this very secluded beach. As it was raining we ate in the car, looking out over the sea, and to Abbey island, which we later visited and became the highlight of the day.

This was the O'Donnell family property and Daniel lived here for part of his life. The Gardens are most attractive and the excellent guide we had told us much of interest about O'Donnell's life. There is some interesting and beautiful furniture including his large impressive chair, a table supported a large central base carved from one tree and a clavichord he donated to some nuns. Also you see a large gilded chariot which was specially built for him on his release from Richmond Prison in1844 and then later carried his coffin after his death in Genoa, Italy. The hotel bed he died in is displayed in the house. When he was in prison he was treated royally and even invited his friends in for dinner parties. There is also a chapel.

Our family had a few days in Ireland and decided on a whim to go horse riding. I had never been in a horse in my life (55). I was put at ease and kitted out with boots and a hat. My horse was called Cinders and was lovely. We went slowly along a country lane in a group of about 8 beginners with a tutor leading and a student at the rear. We went down a small track and my breath was taken away with the stunning scenery and beach. We walked through shallow water and dunes and even had a go at a trot! I will never forget it. Will definitely do again.
One complaint. " my bum really hurt the next day"

Abbey Island

I have a special interest in Abbey Island as I work as a Tour Guide in Glasnevin Cemetery where Daniel O'Connell is laid to rest in the most elegant funeral vault on the Island of Ireland.
When you visit Abbey Island, where Daniel's wife Mary O'Connell is laid to rest, you will understand instantly why her remains were not relocated to any other location - Abbey Island is simply stunning.
When funerals take place here it's necessary to come out to Abbey Island when the tide is out and to return before the tide comes back in again. Magical.
What a location - in the happiness of life and/or in the sadness of death.

Irish Fairy Trails

A magical fairy trail through the woodlands of Darrynane House, where young visitors can discover miniature houses where fairies live. This is a free attraction and open throughout the year.

A nice woodland made magical by the addition of cute little fairy houses. Everyone will have their own favourite fairy home and parents will have trouble keeping up with little fairy hunters looking for one they've missed. We easily spent over an hour here, but time flew and had we not wanted to see the bay and house too, could have spent a lot longer here. Very enjoyable experience. There is a map available from the Cafe, but it really isn't necessary once you find the woods located directly behind Derrynane House.

What a great pub! Full of people who enjoy a good night out.
If you want a rip roaring singsong, then this is the place to be. You could not buy the fabulous atmosphere I experienced here. Each singer was better than the previous so the quality of the live music was superb.
Our host Freddie is a great character and mixed in with the clientele freely.
Great stuff!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with John & Kerryann. John gregariously gave a comprehensive introduction to the different kinds of seaweed. He is impassioned about his subject - there was no question he couldn't handle. Then he took us down to the beach on the Ring of Kerry -- a stunning setting -- and continued to educate us -- it was real hands-on learning, only to be followed by really delicious seaweed dishes that Kerryann prepared for us all. We found out about it from a brochure that morning, called John, and by that afternoon they had a workshop for 10 of us. Great day with John, Kerryann and little Ethel!
