Bira Dive Camp in Bira, South Sulawesi, offers competitive diving/accommodation packages. Located right on the beach. Dive without seeing other dive groups. Courses are available for all levels with our friendly professional dive instructors. Bira diving features variety in dive site landscape such as sandy slopes, steep walls, and plateaus. Aquatic life you are likely to see here - green turtles, whitetip reef sharks, marble rays, stingrays, napoleon wrasses, bumphead parrotfish, tunas, octopus, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, mantis shrimps, pipefish, leaf scorpionfish, frogfish, and much more. Anything is possible between July and October, the big fish season, when divers have seen black tip reef sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads, manta rays and mola molas. Small groups, max 4 per guide. If divers are different levels we bring an extra guide and split the groups. Generally we offer 2 dives in the morning and extra dives including night dives can be arranged on request.
Stayed here with my partner from 18/9 till 24/9 to do some diving (just me).
The journey from Makassar takes quite a while (about 6 hours, even with private transfer). Upon reaching Bira, there's a IDR 40k entrance fee per foreigner.
We had a booking for Beach Panda 2 but decided not to stay there as it was very rowdy with very loud music & the room didn't even resemble the pictures on booking.com so instead we stayed at Bira Dive Camp in an en-suite bungalow (no A/C). The bungalow has a nice open air bathroom & a fan inside the mosquito net around the bed (fan is quite rusty but definitely needed for us). Breakfast lacks imagination as everyday it's the same: scrambled eggs or omelet with toast & fruit. We feel that it would be quite easy to just change the b'fast menu daily (pancake, eggs, dougnuts/beignets, mee/nasi goreng, porridge,...).
Food & drinks at the restaurant are acceptable but depend on the chef's enthusiasm (2nd part of our stay a new menu/lower pricing was introduced & we felt this was an improvement). There are limited options within walking distance if you want to dine elsewhere but we had dinner twice at Bara Beach Bungalows & liked the food there (though a little bit more pricey).
As any remote location in Indonesia, power failures are common (usually only a short while but we had 1 full day without till evening). Water has to be trucked in & for the bungalows with en-suite the storage seems to be rather small so we run out of water a couple of times in the morning but Delivery would be made a few hours later.
Diving was great with good air quality, nice local boats (with shade) & good dive instructors/guides. We saw lots of white tip reef sharks, different types of rays (blue spotted, marble, devil, eagle), lots of barraccuda's & plenty of other sea life around the healthy reefs. The water was a bit cooler than most places in Indonesia (24-28'C) with moderate current on most dives.
As mentioned in the title, the whole Bira Dive Camp is under new management & things seem to be improving bit by bit!

Along the way to reach Tanjung Bira from Makassar you may visit several beautiful places such as Tamalahea, Jeneponto, Bantaeng and Bulukumba. 5 hours drive would be paid off with the panaromic view offered by nature. In addition, you may enjoy white sand Beaches, beautiful sea, delicious sea food as well as journey to the Islands nearby. Buy some souvenirs from locals as a momento of your visit to Bira.

We came by 3pm and it was amazing; but we think it would be better if you come to this place in the morning when the sun is up and not too shiny.
Overall I love this beach because it has different character with other Beaches in Bira (white sands, calm waves).

Very clear water and perfect spot to watch sunrise. Not exactly the cleanest beach, I spotted some plastic paper and bottles, and mostly seaweed. Overall it's still clean. And quiet.

The location is not far from Tanjung Bira, the famous white sand beach at Bulukumba, South Sulawesi. Bara beach has soft white sand and clear water, nice for swimming. Bara beach is more quiet than Bira, so it will be recommended for relaxing and refresuing. Suggest to stay in Bara beach (i.e. Bara Beach Bungalows) when you are visiting there.

I visited this island twice during my visit to Tanjung Bira. It's a perfect place for resting or having lunch after snorkeling/diving around this island and its neighboring island, Pulau Kambing. There are guest houses and restaurants where we can buy seafood (including lobster) for reasonable price. There's also turtle captivity but I'm not sure if it's legal or not since the facilities was pretty poor. It's just sad that I still spotted trash on the beach. Remember to bring sunblock lotion, hat, or umbrella because it's very hot during midday.
The sea around these island was calm enough that my 7 years old daughter could go snorkeling on her own. Make sure you consult to locals or your boat driver about the current and weather before letting younger children snorkeling. You can also bring some crackers for fish feeding.

Located in the district of Bulukumba,Tanah Beru is the land of the famous legendary Phinisi ( wooden boats/ship) shipbuilding industry of Indonesia. Here in the village of Lemo-Lemo traditional shipbuilders still exist till today.Local skilled craftmen of Lemo-Lemo (the Konjos) are experts in making wooden ships of various sizes & shapes. They are masters craftmen since ancient times and inherited their skills from generation to generation. Most of the ships are specially ordered and customised by merchant from all over the world as far as Europe & USA.
Tanah Beru is located in the pristine southern shores of Bulukumba.
Access to the village is quite easy located along the main road leading towards Bulukumba before reaching Bira.A signage and a replica of a phinisi can be seen upon reaching the entrance of the village Tana Beru. From Makassar it takes approx.about 4 to 5 hrs journey by road to reach the place. The main road from Makassar town goes south thru Gowa and passes thru 5 other district Talafar,Jeneponto ,Banteang and Bulukumba before reaching Bira at the endpoint. The view of the surroundings goes from town to villages thru grasslands and Beaches simply fascinating!
Be prepared for a long journey drive and stop overs for refreshments & rest.Transportation can be arranged from Makassar Bus terminals to Bira.Alternatively one can charter private transport motorcar or taxi for a single trip cost around 80K rp to 100k rp depending on your bargaining power. The whole trip will covers approx 280km frm Makassar.
For ship enthusiast like shipbuilders, historian or solo travellers this is a chance not to be missed!.Don't forget to armed yourself with cameras & lenses or hp for photographs and memories. The view is awesome! The sea is beauty and stunning!Once you reach the place there will be lots of shipyards along the shores to choose from.If you are lucky enough you can spot ship's being launch by the locals on certain days.
However there is not much motels around the vicinity except the fishermen huts all around.Or go directly to nearest Bira at the endpoint where there are lots of reasonably cheap chalets and motels to stay over nite. The locals are most friendly and passionate people.Asked the locals might be most helpful to venture around.
Even though this is my first visit here to a place unknown to me,I find it very rewarding experience to explore Tanah Beru after all!I would love to come back here someday again and see the real life of the seafarers and the fine craftmen at work! From my own personal opinion no regrets.. No venture no gain! Good to go!

Many dive spots around, one of the most famous is Cape Bira where grey reef sharks, black and white-tips, napoleons, big groupers, barracudas, eagle rays, tunas and other huge pelagic fishes are often found. From May to June is whale shark season and in August there is the chance to meet manta rays. Even molamolas are regularly seen. Walls, reef slopes, coral Gardens, every kinds of dive spots are

Kajang with the culture its awesome place in Indonesia, where the people in here still maintain their culture. You can see all the people in here wear black clothes & without base on their foot.

the road to the beach is still underdeveloped and you do need to a fair bit of walking to get there after you park your vehicle, but i didn’t find it a problem. the beach itself is free but along the way, there are 2 spots to take pictures that require a fee of Rp5000/each but it’s definitely worth it. we spent a decent time in the first spot and only passed through the second spot (no extra fee). i believe not many tourists there and we were actually the only ones there when we visited except for some fishermen. the beach itself is very clean and well maintained. i enjoyed the beautiful white sand, the turquoise water and the cliffs. there are also swings that you can sit on while drinking cold drinks from the shops available there. it is very hot in the afternoon so i recommend going in the evening.
