Reminiscent of the Paro Taktsang/Birdsnest Monastery in Bhutan, Hozoviotissa is nearly as impressive and much easier to get to. Here is what you should know.
A locked gate restricts access to the walkway outside of 5p-7p. Arrive early as the small parking lot fills up and you will park progressively farther away. The walk on a rock solid staircase will be an effort for some and takes about 10 minutes. The monastery in confined inside, dark with impressive displays. PHOTOGRAPHY IS PROHIBITED AND ONE OF THE ATTENDANTS WILL MAKE YOU DELETE THE IMAGES ON YOUR MEMORY CARD IF HE CATCHES YOU.
The best exterior photos of the monastery are during the approach. If you can, get there before the sunsets behind the Mountains. Better still, go twice: when it's open and again at sunrise. I did.

If you are traveling to the Hozoviotissa Monastery, you will likely pass through Chora each way; this is why you should stop on the way back.
Located near where the road summits and before it descends into the coastal approach to Hozoviotissa, Chora's visible architecture is, itself, evocative. We parked on the highway just before entering the town and walked. Nearing the town, entrances to walkways become visible; take one/it and it will meander through the town's alleyways, replete with shops and taverns. We (a group of 9) stopped at one tavern for drinks and snacks, enjoying the view of the city. Looking south, you will see as series of windmills along the ridge...walk back if you can before sunset and enjoy the view of the city as the sunsets far in to the west.
Chora is why you are traveling the Cyclades and stopped on Amorgos

Island is extremely windy. This cuts the wind just right.
Bring some snacks, music, beverages and maybe your sneakers as it's a hike down a mountain.
Supposedly other reviews said there are hidden paths to other Beaches. We couldn't find it.
We didn't stay long because we were quite bored without any water, snack, books, music, rackets or something to keep us busy.
Also- don't expect to have any cell network. Seems like this half of the island is disconnected from any networks.

Very small beach just under the monastery of Hozoviotissa. You can either enjoy lying on the sand or sit on a rock. If you are quite young you can also swim to the big rocks that are in the sea just next to the beach, climb and jump off them. I used to do that when I was younger, not anymore......The water is quite cold but after a while you get used to it. I definitely recommend a visit before you leave the island!
FYI: This is where the film "The Big Blue" was shot. Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can clearly be seen.
Tip: Better wear trainers to climb down. Quite rocky until you reach the beach.

A good beach to spend a day on. It can get a bit windy as it did today, so the waves can pick up a bit. Gently shelving though, with a rock or two to negotiate underfoot before reaching chest height and the best swimming areas. Lots of eateries the other side if the traffic - free Promenade, or a very short stroll to the main harbour area. Great for watching the sunset from!

Maltezi beach is a lovely spot to spend the day. We caught the little beach boat over but you can walk over the headland if you prefer. It is a quiet little bay with sun lounges and umbrellas to hire if you want too or you can lie on the sand for free. Maria runs the cantina there with great coffee, drinks and food. There is also a big table under the shade for sitting with your own picnic and a toilet.

Hired a car from Katapola and this was our first stop on the way south. So very pleased the car hire people recommended it. A long paved track off the main road with room to park at the church. As others have said there are set opening times - morning and afternoon. We arrived about 10am. Sister Irene is a shining example of peace. After looking around the church she kindly gave us refreshments and was very happy to talk to us. There were items of her art work for sale. But no hard sell! This visit was a high spot of our holiday.

Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit it as we didn't know opening hours(it is closed from 1pm to 5pm) and they wouldn't let you in with shorts, short sleaves etc. Make sure you have apropriate clothes with you. pity......
