Stopped in this wonderfull little town in Franken for a break and to have lunch.
When we found Torbach, we were happy to experience a very nice athmosphere as well as an excellent food and wine selection.
The restaurant was very authentic and you could easily imagine turning your clock back a century.
So try it if you're in this area.

The Gasthaus zur Krone offers cooking courses and fine dining. We decided to try it instead of some of our regular haunts. It has the usual advantages and disadvantages of a fine-dining restaurant. We ate there early on a Sunday evening. Normally it is fully booked and crowded, so our timing was good.
The menu is rather short, but there was a fish dish and two meat dishes in addition to vegetarian and lighter offerings. I rarely eat beef in Germany, except in very good restaurants. I find the quality, selection of cuts and preparation usually lacking. After asking a few questions about the cattle variety and fat grading, I decided on the Schinkendeckel. However, my wife ordered the steak. The amuse-gueule was a wonderful cream soup and spoke well for the talents of the chef. The bread was crispy and good, but nothing special.
When our main courses arrived, we joked about the size of my wife's steak. It looked more like a children's portion. My wife thought the preparation was perfect and found the meat tender. For the 26€ charged, I expected Prime Grade steak. It had the texture of a Choice Grade steak - good, but not great. My Schinkendeckel tasted great, but was a bit chewy. At 19.50€, the portion was a bit small and not worth that price.
Water at 4.50€ is standard and the .25 liter of Bacchus at 4.50€ was a good choice and good value. Service by the two owners was prompt, courteous and efficient. There is a large indoor dining area and a small Terrace. The interior was clean and nicely decorated. The toilets are relatively modern and the towels are cloth, The Terrace is a bit cramped, smoke from a nearby table was a constant annoyance, and we had the company of numerous flies. (The modern bug-zapper has been around since 1934.)
We found the kitchen of Gasthaus zur Krone excellent, the restaurant comfortable and nicely decorated, the service excellent but the value, even for fine dining, no better than average.

Nice place for lunch or a coffee; had no dinner there. For dinner I would prefer the gasthof which the Beringer family also owns. But this place ticks also the boxes on a rainy afternoon as it is one big winter garten.

We were looking to try something new and stumbled upon this hidden treasure. It sits at the bottom of the hill on which sits the Vogelsburg. The Mainblick is unassuming and we almost passed it by, but it was getting late. Judging by the prices, I suspected it was nothing special. Inside, it was a typical gasthaus, clean, bright, nicely decorated, but with restraint. The waitress was friendly and very helpful. The people at the adjoining table raved about their dishes. My wife ordered the smoked FRESH trout. Neither of us had heard of it, which meant one of us had to try it. I had the Schweinsteak with Mushrooms. We also tried the house Sylvaner and Traminer wines. First to come was a very ordinary looking fresh salad. I rarely rave about salads, but this was one of the best I have had. The smoked trout was absolutely outstanding. We are trout lovers, but neither of us has had a better one than this. We are now both smoke lovers. It is well worth the 20-25 minute preparation time. My meal was also good, but not great. The meat was less tender than I had hoped, but the surface was succulent and done to perfection. The Pommes Frites were made with fresh cut potatoes and were a rare treat in this age of quick food. The service was friendly and very helpful. The entire meal, 2 wines and a bottle of water came to less than 34 Euro. I call that a bargain. We have already recommended the restaurant to several friends. If you want a really good view, stop at the Vogelsburg. If you want a really good meal, drive around to the bottom of the hill and eat at the Mainblick, where the view is not nearly as good.

We had diner only once but it was a very nice experience (we just had one dish and some wine). Courtyard a nice place to enjoy in the summer. Opened quite late for German restaurant. Price quite high. Excellent shop also if you want to buy a few bottles of local wine. The hotel and restaurant has its own vineyards. Recommended.

This restaurant is owned by the famous Juliusspital, charitable hospital and wine producer. Located just outside Volkach, it just might have the best view anywhere on the Main River. For years it was a seedy, mediocre restaurant. Now the view is complemented with new furniture, new paint and a spic & span appearance. The food is also much improved. This is a great place to stop for an afternoon snack or a romantic evening meal. There is also a hotel, but we have not tried it yet.
We visited soon after the restaurant reopened. Hopefully our disappointment was a result of reopening pains. On the positive side, the restaurant has probably the best view of the Main Valley. As before the renovation, it is always filled to capacity. The redesigned outdoor Seating area has several safety hazards that could lead to serious falls. These are so obvious that it is hard to understand why they are still there.
The wait staff was the usual mixed bag. Some employees are eager to please while others seem permanently annoyed by customers. They employed new electronic devices to take and manage the orders. Perhaps it was the lack of experience with them, but the order taking took about double the time that paper and pencil would.
The menu is surprisingly limited despite the enlarged dining area and kitchen. Prices are somewhat higher than merited by the quality and service. Four of us met there to eat and each tried a different dish. While all were satisfactory, none stood out as anything out of the ordinary for Gasthaus fare. Portion sizes were adequate.
I am reluctant to blame next-day digestive disturbances to a specific meal or place. Often there is no provable link. Let me just say that each of the four of us had the same unpleasant digestive symptoms the next day and the Vogelsburg meal was the only meal we took in common.
Despite the splendid view and generally pleasant facilities, there were so many problems that I cannot rate this restaurant as even average.

A small but traditional weinstube/restaurant. Excellently prepared food with fresh ingredients from local suppliers washed down with the accredited local wines from the restaurant owners uncle. Added to that the friendly service and the Schoppenhausle is the perfect place to enjoy a taste of Franconian hospitality.

Was soll ich sagen: super lecker! Und nicht so alkoholisiert. Wir kommen gerne wieder um die anderen Kuchen zu testen.
