The place was bursting at its seams last weekend. We were a medium-sized group, and managed to find Seating fairly quickly. Food quality was good, but service was quite slow, and in many instances sloppy. The staff, clearly not locals, were still likely in their training period. Took them multiple instructions to get basic stuff right.

During our stay at Vijayawada, we visited the most popular restaurant “Babai Hotel” to have the pleasure of tasting the south Indian dishes prepared in a traditional manner . This hotel was started in 1942 by Patruni Sambamoorti who fondly used to call his customers “Babai” which means father’s younger brother. The hotel is in a small house with four or five tables. Old photos showing celebrities like politicians and film actors are displayed on the walls. Famous personalities like Sri Vajpayi, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy,Sri N.T.Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri, Chandra Mohan came here to have their breakfast.
Most of the customers buy coupons, and wait for their turn to taste the idilis topped with a lump of fresh white butter along with coconut chutney, sambar and spicy powder. Forgetting the simple surroundings they enjoy eating idlis which are prepared using natural ingredients without adding any artificial substances. They follow the same old menu and old techniques and the surroundings also remind us the good old times when we used to sit in a homely restaurant without any showy splendor. Tiffin items like Idli, Upma, pongal , Pesarattu with Upma and Dosa are staple menu all prepared in a traditional manner and served in plates with banana leaves. The steaming cups of coffee in steel glasses with tumblers remind us the traditional way of serving coffee. At the reception counter also we do not find any computer. The manager just writes the bill on a slip and hands it with a friendly smile. After Babai’s demise in 1985, his nephew Valiveti Narasimha Rao became the proprietor. In 2007 the building of the hotel was renovated with addition of two upper floors accommodating twenty five people on each floor. The working hours are from 7.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m and from 6.00 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. Only tiffins are available here. This hotel is looked upon as a heritage hotel with a long history of serving great people for the last seventy five years. Don’t miss the chance of going to this place if you go to Vijayawada.

I had dinner here on day 1 of my stay in Vijayawada. Went there as it was located right opposite to the hotel i stayed. The food served here is good with sufficient quantity. However the service here is very slow and the staff here is un-courteous. They struggle with both hindi and english and converse in Telugu only.

Visited above restaurant on 10th January to have North Indian food. We reached there around 2 pm. The North Indian food was good and it took almost twenty minutes to arrive.
When few members of our group went outside for shopping the waiter brought the bill to the table asap.
So I told him that we are going to sit for an hour or so and going to order coffee/tea/pastries. The waiter informed us that the pastries displayed on the counter near the restaurant are only for display and any order for pastries will take at least half hour to prepare it. We also have to inform four/five times to clear the table before serving tea.
Being Taj inner circle member, we expected better service standards, as experienced in other Taj hotels.

Variety of options available. Ambience not that great. Poor service. Even for standard items they take 30 mins to serve. Really testing our patience. Food items also not that of great taste for the amount priced. Not worth it.

We went to the Lotus Restaurant last night with friends visiting us from Sydney. I had ordered a table near the window for 4 persons overlooking the lake for 7pm.. On arrival we were shown to our table which had lovely views of the lake and the yachting grounds were families were eating outside on the lawn. I decided I was having a medium rare Black Angus steak Tenderloin with fat chips and so did my friend's Husband costing $38.00 each which were delicious. My Husband had his favorite Battered Flathead fillets on a huge green garden salad with flat chips costing $27.00 which he adored, and my girlfriend ordered a Pan Seared Barramundi costing $31.00 which she said was superb. We ordered two glasses of Peter Lehmann Riesling costing $8.00 each =$16.00 which complemented the fish dishes perfectly. I ordered a bottle of Clonakilla Shiraz costing $48.00 which was stunning with our steaks. We also ordered two flat white coffees costing a total of $8.00 to finish the evening. The total cost for such a pleasant night with our interstate friends was $208.00 which we felt was well worth it as the food, surrounding and staff were all excellent and we will certainly be going to this Restaurant more often in the future.
