…can be found with us at the Bären. Century-old cladded walls and rustic wooden floors are evidence of the wealth of history in the building. For example in the past the building occupied by the Bären was used for a spice store, a post office, an embroidery room and also a bakery. This interesting past makes the Bären so unique and should not be forgotten even in the 21st century. Examples include the wine cellar with its vaulted ceiling dating back to the Middle Ages, the forge that has been brought back to life, the display cabinet with in-house specialities, the cosy taverna with its copper chimney or the various cosy alcoves on the first floor. In our historic Bären with its stylish decor a unique atmosphere awaits you with genial warmth and friendliness from the Appenzell. Regardless of which room(s) you select: we will treat you during your stay with us to lots of Appenzell cordiality and of course to local but also international delicacies from our kitchen.
We had a very large room in the dependance. It was almost like an appartment (no kitchen). The staff is very friendly and the restaurant in the main house can be highly recommended.

If you are faint at heart then you may want to avoid this restaurant. One must ride a ski lift that scales steep mountain cliffs then hike a short distance along a safe but rocky path, that winds through a damp cave and gets very narrow at parts.
But once there, this restaurant is perched in a place with an incredible view. I had the hash browns with cheese and two fried eggs. It was deeeeeeelicious.
If you want a "once in a lifetime" restaurant experience, don't pass this up.

We snowshoe’d up to the mountain house, and the last half of the hike was in fog, blowing snow, and whiteout conditions. We were certainly glad to arrive at the warm hut, with its big 200 year old wood stove and its very traditional Appenzell interior.
This house is up at the top of a local hill (1300m+ hill!), so do not expect gourmet cuisine or décor. This is a mountain hut “beiz” – a place for hikers to get food, some warm drinks, some snacks, or a quick shot of schnapps before hitting the trail again. The menu is traditional, local kitchen food (pasta, cheese, wurst, bread,…)… think of it as fuel for the journey. The hospitality was fine, and the staff seemed pleased to have visitors on such a snowy day, but we were the only visitors in the place. I can imagine it gets crowded and slow on a busy weekend day.
As mentioned, we were up there in snow and fog, so I cannot comment on the view, but the following days when the sun did come out we could see the house from miles away across the valley, …so it must be beautiful.
We were grateful to have an interesting (and warm) lunch destination at the top of the hill, the hike/snowshoe up is very beautiful (even in the fog) and we will gladly go again, but perhaps next time on a sunny summers day.

attraktive Küche, kreatives Familienrestaurant und Pizzeria, saisonales Angebot und Ambiente, sehr gute Preis-Leistung, grosser Spielplatz und Spielzimmer,
I have been living in Switzerland for 4 years and unless you go to an international restaurant all the other ones you can find have the same menukarte then same flavours, specially if you are in the countryside. But this restaurant - call today "Esseria Hargarten" is quite of an exception! The place, decoration, service and every detail is perfect but above all... The food! Not an extense menukarte but every dish is something special. I ate tomaten soup with kokonuss icecream: delicious combination and later Papardelle with olives and cherry tomatoe: perfect balance of flavours, fresh and warm at the same time. For dessert a nice tiramisu. I tried a bit from my husband's meal choice: crunchy ribs that melt in the mouth and as dessert a wonderful creme brule! Fresh homemade lemonade, several teas, kindermenu great and kinder room for play. A gem in Appenzell region!

Good, traditional food at very reasonable prices. Good service, nice ambiance, clean restrooms and well located. Seems to be frequented by locals mostly. Would recommend!

We selected Baeren for a business dinner based on a recommendation from local gourmets. What looks fairly traditional and not spectacular from the outside is a gem inside / very modern and yet very cozy, excellent menu, beautiful and well stocked wine cellar (have a walk through !) and superb service in English with the lovely Swiss accent. Very recommendable, I will go back.

Great location on top of the Santis mountain with an unbelievably great all around view ...
Its a real dream and you feel on top of the world - don't miss this one. A great Mountain Guest House in traditional Swiss hospitality ... Family property since 1846 and opening of extension with eating hall/Saal and 9 new guestrooms in 2012.
Stay over nite and experience the fantastic Sunset/ Sunrise ... you will never forget ...
Food is traditional local Swiss and Appenzell fair. A must try is also the great local
Lager Appenzeller Beer, Quoll frisch (Using fresh spring mountain water).
There is also a big open Terrace Seating 150 - overlooking the entire round Mountain (Panorama) The Service is absolutely acceptable despite a heavy workload on a sunny/warm day. These young Service Associates are working hard and are doing an excellent job ....Congratulations !
Food is nice, simple local + try the many Ice cream desserts.
This is a place not to be missed . . . and you will not forget.

Just like 90% of Italian restaurants outside Italy, this place would close in 3 months if located anywhere in Italy.
I tried a vegetarian pizza and I found on it quite a few things that I've honestly never seen on an authentic Italian pizza, like broccoli and spinach, while none of the regular veggie items where present (onions, peppers, eggplants).
Also, I'd be curious to know what kind of yeast has been used to get a pasta so little leavened.
My colleague went for some kind of factory-made tortelli which were swimming in a super-liquid panna. He didn't complain though.
But luckily I found something really Italian: when some friends of the owner arrived for dinner (around 15 minutes later than me), they got the best table and received their pizza right away, while I was still waiting for mine.
I won't talk about the price: my pay is in Euros so I'm a bit sensitive about this topic.
No wifi available, just in case.

This place has a modern ambience and contemporary menu making it stand out against its traditional rivals. The food was okay without being spectacular. My finely cut fries arrived cold.
