As I have said in other recent opinions, I find it more and more complicated to use TripAdvisor as a reliable source of information given the avalanche of opinions of people who, to say the least, have problems differenciating good food from the rest. In touristic places like Madeira, this is specially complicated. However, we followed the advise of previous comentators (namely Tiago from Madrid... Thanks!) and our visit to Muralha was a success.
The offer is based on the good available ingredients, specially seafood. This sounds simple but believe me it is not as common because many restaurants are either tourist traps or are (in my opinion) too oriented to the international taste. Honestly, I do not look for that: I prefer local food and cuisine and this is what I found in Muralha. Fresh ingredients, tasty cuisine, and nice service all at quite good prices. We ended up paying 100EUR for a meal for 3 including a bottle of white wine (the waiter recommended us the cheaper among the 3 wines I had pre-selected and was a really good choice), espetada de lulas, polvo, fish of the day (recommended!) and desserts. Generous dishes, specially the fish of the day served with boiled potatoes and a tasty salad.
Plenty of locals having dinner, which I see as a good sign. So, if you are looking for a place where you can eat nice seafood for a reasonable price and with a good service, this is your place.

We were passing by Ribeira Brava and decided to stop and grab some lunch.
The location is very nice and central, great athmosphere also.
Service was quick and attentive. The gentleman who brought our food gave each of us a compliment as he put down our plates and our waiter was always concerned if everything was to our liking during and after lunch.
We ordered two steak on the plate with fries and salad, the milho cozido with tuna steak and three drinks. Paid 29.50€.
Food was ok but had better, meat could be more tender and juicy, bit of a letdown. Might come back to try something else off the menu, since they have a wide range of foods.

Jest to zwykły bar dla lokalnych gości.Można tu zjeść dobra zupę lub tradycyjne dania regionalne.Za bardzo przystępne ceny.Jest tutaj dużo taniej niż w innych barach w okolicy.Obsługa bardzo miła i pomocna.Polecam

Visited tonight - easy to find contrary to some reviews . Almost empty so usually would take as a bad sign but generally town was quiet so thought we would try it. Waitress/ owner was very friendly. Menu was available in English - good range of traditional meals. Shrimp omelette was packed with large prawns and well cooked with the add addition of fresh parsley - came with an incredibly large portion chips ( next time I would ask for larger salad and less chips), my husband had the steak filled with ham and cheese. The steak was poker quality than other places with quite a bit of fat but the sauce was good. Whole meal with bread and coffee was €22.

This is one of a number of snack bars, restaurants along the seafront. You sit outside, which is always nice, but the menu is quite limited and offering the same fare as everywhere else around it. I had the beef skewers – a recommended local dish – but I thought the beef was a little tough and tasteless and the meat would have benefited from a sauce of some sort. I also tried the "milho" which is effectively fried polenta cubes. I did enjoy that, but it would not be to everyone's taste. My husband had the grilled fish which was beautifully cooked and very fresh, but not particularly special. The service was quite friendly and the price reasonable, but this is not somewhere I would particularly recommend. Fine if you happen to be passing and the complimentary passionfruit to the curb which comes with the bill is a high spot!

A real local experience: select by yourself and oder your cut of meat from the
butcher counter and "create" your own espetada (skewers) that will be grilled
by the staff. The portions are generous, the "bolo da caco" amazing, the price cheap, the quality of the meat delicious. The feeling is a bit "rustic", but the experience is surely worth it. Some knowledge of Portuguese helps, but the staff was helpful.

Wonderful little bakery, with high quality fresh cakes, desserts and pastries all produced on the premises, and a Terrace where you can happily while away an hour or more drinking their excellent coffee with a generous slab of cake at a bargain price. They do lunches too, with a different soup and main for each day, but we didn't try those as the cakes and desserts are simply too tempting. You can order cakes for special occasions, but in my view, these cakes will transform any day into a special occasion, so why wait? Enjoy! There is a ramp up to the Terrace which is a little steep but manageable for a wheelchair, and plenty of parking nearby.
