This is truly an exceptional find in a small Italian village. The atmosphere is a combination of fine dining and the feeling that you are with family. The hostess/server was wonderful. I knew just enough Italian and she knew just enough English that we were able to order. Chef Maria also visited with us to explain several dishes and to offer alternatives if we did not wish certain ingredients.
The experience started when we were seated in the lovely dining room and served a cocktail and a bread soup - yes, it was a soup that tasted like fresh bread with olive oil and herbs. After this, we received our menus and sorted through many options from tasting menus to a la carte items.
We chose the tasting menu of local Toscana dishes. One of the courses had liver, of which the hostess was sure to make us aware. She offered to substitute a lovely porcini mushroom salad - it was truly delicious.
There were many courses, my favorite was the rabbit. We also had the wine parings. Each wine was from Tuscany and went very well with each dish. The dessert course was very surprising - a gorgonzola gelato with wafers. I enjoyed the salty/sweet/cheesy taste while my husband opted for the peach gelato version. The meal was about 125 Euros per person with the wine pairings and well worth it.
This experience is for those willing to spend time over a meal - at least two hours or more - and those willing to try something different. Remember that these are local specialties, not something we are used to getting in the States.
Overall this was a wonderful surprise and excellent representation of the area cuisine.

We were recommended this restaurant by the owner of a local vineyard. We stayed in the former owners’ villa.
The food is cooked perfectly. The service is impeccable. The servers were knowledgable and passionate.
The food was a culinary celebration, and the meal itself was an experience.
The variety of bread, olive oils, and balsamic vinegar alone was fantastic!

Finely restored, the restaurant is located at the entrance of the small hamlet of Agriturismo Montalbino. The interior is extremely attractive: in the main dining room the eye rests, on one side, on the open roasting pit protected by a large window surrounded by the words of a typical Tuscan recipe written on the wall, on the other, through a large window the view stretches as far as the hills and the valley of Montalbino. Whatever the occasion “La Lombricaia” will allow to taste the flavours of Tuscany directly at our tables.
Inspired by some great past lunch experiences, we went there for dinner. Feeling lucky that we got a front row table on the Terrace with the panoramic view, we soon came to realise that only this - the view - was the highlight this evening.
The turnout on the evening was a mix of guests staying at the holiday houses and guests from the outside like us. When ordering, we learned that the night before there had been more than 100 guests and our waiter had been working overtime until 2am to cope with the demand. Our evening turned out to be a disaster thanks to this obvious under-staffing. This led to our dinner being served with an interval of 30 minutes from first to last person being served, the side orders for the secondo being served 15 minutes prior the main cause, the wine order being totally messed up, and an overall very slow and poor service. Food quality this evening also below expectations (e.g. overcooked pasta), but surely influenced by the same underlying issue as the service.
Under the current management, we can not recommend anybody to visit this beautifully located restaurant. With the mix of in-house/external guests, it is incomprehensible that planning can not be done in such a way that adequate staff is on hand to cope with the demand.
One point for location. For all the rest: Shape up - we know it's possible to do a lot better !

After Reading positive reviews on another site, we decided to have lunch here. Parking is available in a lot across the street. Our waiter spoke great English. He provided helpful recommendations. We enjoyed our meal and dessert.

Visited twice, lunch and evening meal with a group of around 10-12 on both occasions. They don't serve pizzas at lunch but the pasta was great. Pizzas in the evening were excellent - the normal size being plenty for most appetites. Overall, good food good service, nice location in the town piazza.

We had dinner at C'era Una Volta on the recommendation of the owner of the villa where we were staying. He said the restaurant had very good traditional Tuscan dishes and he was right. Unfortunately, we ate there the last night we were staying in the area, otherwise we would have gone back a second time.
The diverse menu is filled with traditional Tuscan dishes. There were so many that sounded good it was hard to choose. I thought the quality was excellent, the portions good-sized and the prices fair. They also have a good wine list plus house wine.
There is an outdoor Terrace that has excellent views of the countryside, but the night we were there it was heavy rain and thunder so we had to eat inside. It is located kind of in the middle of nowhere in a really small village, but in my opinion worth the drive. WE definitely would have gone back a second time.

Starting with bread. Fresh out of the oven poppy seeded and sunflower seeded small bread nuggets. Appetizer was a wonderful. Grilled vegetables wrapped around buffalo mozzarella cheese was savory and fresh. Pear cheese and poppy seed ravioli was flavorful and differently delicious. Seafood pasta special had 7 fresh seafood varieties was well prepared. Pasta was perfectly cooked and the seafood soaked in the seafood. The wine selection was local and a great value and high quality. Chef owned establishment with great environment and little extras to make the experience extraordinary!

Incredible little place! As is not uncommon in this region, the restaurant is off the beaten track and doesn't open until 8... ( recommend you make a reservation) Food and service wonderful ..traditional and fresh. And their own wine is superb and so reasonably priced. They don't sell it anywhere else .. We bought three bottle to take home! We are going back before we leave this area.
