We stopped in Meaux for lunch, parked near the town hall and luckily came accross this wonderful restaurant nearby. The place is family run and the menu is listed on a blackboard, limited, but freshly cooked. They were very welcoming and explained in English the menu to us and we enjoyed a fantastic meal. Very good value for money. We knew we were onto a winner, as a lot of local people were dining there...always a good sign.

I came across Auberge du Champs de Mars as I was walking into town from the Hotel Kyriad where I was staying. To be honest it’s on a busy dual carriageway and you would miss it in a car travelling at speed. I think they have rooms but it is the restaurant that is the real find. It’s the sort of place you read about in the Sunday paper travel section when the correspondent goes on about this unspoilt French restaurant. It’s the sort of place you expect Rick Stein to pop up in.
The decor is charmingly old world rather than designer plastered on and I think it is a chef proprietere and wife organisation. I had the 27 euro menu Starters were a delicious dish of avocado prawns and smoked salmon with some dressed leaves and a nice sauce in a thin line round he edge of the plate. The main course was an incredibly tasty piece of calves liver with a raspberry vinegar sauce served with a selection of vegetables. They had a great and varied cheese board they wheeled it up and you picked what you wanted none of the four smears on a plate stuff. The desert was profteroles in a delicious chocolate sauce. All in all it was classic good everyday French cooking no fancy foams etc. I would willingly go back again to this place and it wasn’t listed n trip advisor so I had to write tot hem to put it in because I thought they deserved a real good write up. You can reach it by taxi from central Meaux for about 8 euros. By contrast I ate at another much more upscale place in Meaux and the meal wasn't half as good.

Ended up in this place by accident and found a authentic French restaurant. Those that appreciate high-end gastronomy and haute cuisine, will probably not be dissapointed by the menu. As mentioned by other visitors already, it is all in French which can be a struggle if you don't speak French. Don't expect the English of the staff to be much better and be prepared to take some efforts when ordering. Food however, was good for all of us. Beware of the cheese trolley though, the smell coming along with it might be quite strong, yet, the authentic French cheeses are great.

Quality of food matched only by quality of service. ( Both of which were outstanding). Uncertain of a 'chain' restaurant, we stopped there because it is August in France and everything else was closed. Very happy we did, and will do again for sure. I had the big plate of oysters and crab, and my wife had the cod. Both were excellent as was the staff.

After a disappointing visit to an Indian restaurant on the same street, it was a relief to find decent food in this restaurant. While the options for vegetarians were similarly limited, the food was fresh and the service was laid back and non invasive. Overall, I would go back if in the area. It would be nice to see more vegetarian main dishes on the menu. If, like me, you like spicy food, make sure you ask the waiter for your dish to be truly spicy. French sub continental restaurants do not automatically serve dishes spicy so you may be disappointed if you don't specify that you'd like your dishes to be spicy.

Returned to Meaux after a good number of years and was pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant still running. We made a strong point of visiting, with fond memories of previous visits in mind, and thankfully we were rewarded with the family (albeit older) delivering good north African dishes. Made two visits during our stay.
Our intentions are of returning next year, all being well, and hopefully to the L'Etoile.

We used Tripadvisor to see the highest rated cafe near the Cathedral and it was this place. It was about 5 minutes walk but easy to find. The interior was clean and welcoming with a mix of tables and bar stools. All the other clients were French but luckily the lady spoke excellent English and was able to help us with the menu.
The food was superb - well cooked and good sized portions. There was also free wifi!
Service was very friendly, the food was great value and we had a very pleasant visit, I really would recommend it.
