Where to Eat in Mahdia: The Best Restaurants and Bars

September 24, 2017 Leida Jutras

Founded in the early 10th century as the capital of Fatimid-ruled Tunisia, Mahdia is today a quiet port town and provincial center of about 40,000 people, known for its fishing, silk weaving and olive industries. One of Tunisia's most picturesque cities, Mahdia lies between Sousse and Sfax and has many historic attractions, including the ruins of an ancient Punic city (pre-dating Mahdia), the Fatimid port, the first Fatimid mosque (built in the 10th century), and a 16th-century Ottoman fort.

Great restaurant, food & wine. Very clean, perfect location between the medina & zone Touristique. Watch the waves splash against the shore from the open fronted 2nd floor & relax in the sea breeze. Run by 'Papa' a very friendly, attentive & sweet old guy & his family. Good for women traveling alone.

We were in Mahdia in December, definitely off-season. The El Nido is said to be the best restaurant in town. We had a couple of beers there, then left and went next door to the Quai. The panel TV was showing football, and the locals were smoking and enjoying their coffees. The food was serviceable, heavy on pan-fried dourade and Tunisian salad, but not up to American, much less European, standards. Service was reasonably attentive. For better value and home cooking, try the Meoz.

Used to be one of the favorite stop when it comes to eat out.Unfortunately i've been there recently and the quality of the food and service has dropped dramatically. First we had to identify the fish in our own since the waiter was clueless and to top it all was not fresh. anyway; we ordered 2 brik with tuna then a steak and Seafood spaghettis. well we only received 1 brik mine i am still waiting for it as for the main course the steak you had to have a shark's jaw to chew it and my Spaghetti was simply terrible.made of frown seafood and too much sauce. we paid 50 DT which for Mahdia and Tunisia in general way too much.... i left really sad as it used to be the best in town and the restaurant belongs to a friend of mine made it even worse.

We ate here as part of our hotel deal. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated and intimate. The waiters are brilliant and the food although not haute cuisine is very good with large portions. Worth a visit.
