Idar-Oberstein is a town in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. As a Große kreisangehörige Stadt (large town belonging to a district), it assumes some of the responsibilities that for smaller municipalities in the district are assumed by the district administration. Today’s town of Idar-Oberstein is the product of two rounds of administrative reform, one in 1933 and the other in 1969, which saw many municipalities amalgamated into one. The various Stadtteile have, however, retained their original identities, which, aside from the somewhat more urban character encountered in Idar and Oberstein, tend to hearken back to each centre’s history as a rural village. Idar-Oberstein is known as a gemstone town, and also as a garrison town. It is also the largest town in the Hunsrück and has a population of 32,001 (December 31, 2015).

My wife and I recently spent a week at this hotel, it was a most pleasant stay. A couple of years ago it went through a bit of a bad patch but it is now under new management. They have made a considerable investment in upgrading the fittings and staff training and it is now back to its old standard as a top class hotel.
The rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed, the chef really knows his business and most of the helpful and well informed staff speak English, or at least enough to get by with anyone who has a few words of German (one of the problems can be their desire to practice their accent on a native English speaker). Should one not desire to go the whole hog of dinner in the restaurant there is the alternative of the Bistro, which is the bar area serving simpler, but no less good, meals.
If you are looking for a hotel in this most attractive area of Germany, you could not go far wrong with a stay here.

If you like pizza, this is the place to go. It is located in the Markt Platz in Oberstein, tucked away in a corner of the plaza. It has limited Seating inside but they also have 2 to 3 large umbrella tables outside for eating. Their pizza is fresh, and their variety and style is large. The balance of the menu is pasta, and is nothing special. It was OK for a visit but I wouldn't go back on a regular basis.

The restaurant located at the small Idar-Oberstein Flugplatz was recommended by the owner of a Bed & Breakfast we stayed at this year while traveling through Europe. We ate at this restaurant on this trip and a prior trip in 2006.
We were searching for a place that served the local favorite "spiessbraten". Spiessbraten is beef or pork with a special marinade and grilled over a open beechwood fire. The spiessbraten was grilled in front of us and the atmosphere and the food was great.
The restaurant is off the beaten path, and all of the customers were locals, with virtually no one speaking english. The owners made us feel welcome, did their best to help us order, and we enjoyed the meals greatly. If we ever return to this area of Germany, we will be sure to stop and enjoy spiessbraten again.

Badisher Hof is a very nice local restaurant specializing in the local favorite speissbraten. They prepare the meat to grill over a open beech wood fire right in the restaurant. The result is outstanding, delicious and is always our favorite place when in Idar-Oberstein. It is very nicely decorated and clean. Very good service.

Authentic and traditional Greek dishes are easy to come by at this family restaurant. The staff is great as it's a family owned business and they really care about the food and customers. They have a fairly large interior of the restaurant with a lot of Greek statues and decor. Their outdoor area is great for large groups when the weather is nice as well.
From refreshing salads to great seared meats, this place is the best Greek restaurant I've been to outside of Greece. The Poseidon Pan is one of their specialties and an easy favorite of mine. Lots of flavor in every dish, sometimes a bit too salty, but very rarely. Cap off your dinner with a complimentary shot of ouzo for the table!
The only thing is parking can be a challenge for dinner on weekends. There's a small lot adjacent, but would be a good idea to go off hours or carpool if possible. Great prices, great atmosphere, and great food!

The Brasserie am Schleiferplatz is one of those uniquely German establishments that fulfil most of the requirements of the community. In the morning you can get a good breakfast there, midday they serve a decent lunch, afternoon coffee and cake is available and in the evening they serve dinner (and a damned good one!). Wine, beer and spirits can be had any time of the day with various seasonal specialities, at the beginning of October, Oktoberfest Paulaner bier is available, at the end of October, Federweisser (newly fermented wine) is available, all with the appropriate food. For the night owls late nights are kept at the weekends and often music as well. Try a visit, you will enjoy it.

Served with a nice salad and a choice of potatoes, to include baked potatoes.... They also offer some nice specials.... the last time I went I had a wonderful salad with skewers of wonderfully seasoned shrimp! It was fabulous!!!
Right at the base of the climb to the church and Castles, this restaurant is pretty perfectly situated for a post-hike meal. We thought German Barbeque was a real treat, and everyone enjoyed their meal thoroughly (the lamb is excellent.)

not a lot open in off season and we ended up in this little italian near the Idar-Oberstein museum for dinner. Pizza was good and the home made pasta was fabulous. Large portions. Would recommend highly.
