A friend of mine invited me to the Gupf 2 years ago and now I have been each visit back to eastern Switzerland also back to the Gupf for a very memorable meal. The setting, view, service and food are all perfect and I cannot wait to go back there in summer for a dinner with overnight stay.

Paul’s is a lovely restaurant hidden in an unlikely section of an industrial zone in Widnau. If you’re not familiar with the area, you’ll need a navigational system or good instructions to find it. There is plenty of free parking next to the restaurant and the new Paul’s Hotel, which however is despite its name is not related to the restaurant.
There is a lovely garden where you can sit outside in clement weather. Inside, the decoration is in warm, friendly, neutral tones. Our waitresses were quite friendly.
We had a beautifully created salad, beef filet, and lamb, as well as a small bottle of wine. For dessert we chose various sorbets, each one better than the last. All of the food was delicious and attractively served.
We have one major complaint: we had to wait unusually long for our food. It took at least 30 minutes to get the salad (fortunately there were some bread and dips to nibble on beforehand), another 30 or so for the main courses, and we didn’t get dessert until 40 minutes after having ordered it. This despite the restaurant being only about ¾ full.
Even though our table was well inside and toward the back, mosquitoes sensed my presence and I was bitten at least ten times on the legs. Note to self: next time wear trousers and socks!
Despite the long wait we would be willing to return to Paul’s and give them another chance, as the rest of the dining experience was top-notch and worthy of five stars.

We went here as a group of friends as some of them had been here before and recommended the meat. The décor of the restaurant is average; they have built a large enclosed patio onto the front which doesn’t really match the interiors. Also the restaurant can get pretty loud when the place is full, so it’s a bit hard to hear each other if you are a larger group. I heard it’s difficult to get a table on the weekends without a reservation, so keep this in mind. There are a lot of parking spaces behind and around the building.
Service was pretty quick and friendly; one waiter however didn’t speak any German (or English) at all and it was kind of difficult to figure out what he was trying to tell us! Some of the dishes include salads whereas some cuts of meat are separate, so any sides must be ordered on their own. I had steamed spinach and a rib eye; its flavor was very good but the meat somewhat tough. I wasn’t expecting this from imported meat and was thus a bit disappointed. One of our group felt his meat was quite underdone despite having ordered it medium, but the others were very satisfied with their cuts. There is a good selection of wine at somewhat higher prices but nothing to break the bank. The food costs more than you would expect for the area, but it isn't terribly expensive.
We did appreciate the little chilled bottles of Schnaps that we got after we paid our bill.

Finding this little gem proved a bit challenging. Though directly beside the church, it is nearly invisible from the street!
Advance booking essential - cozy and airy restaurant with much room between the (few) tables.
A huge thumbs-up for the great staff: friendly, efficient, yet unobstrusive.
Food was really good. Furthermore all dishes were very nicely presented, with much attention paid to details.
As starter I chose the wild herbs salad - simple, fresh and healthy. Stadthof is renowned for its fish. As main course I therefore opted for a trout fillet - grilled to perfection. A coffee creme brulee rounded up the tasty dinner.
The bill amounted to CHF97 - not cheap but definitely well worth it.
Advice for train travellers: the town has several stops. Get off at either Rorschach Stadt or Rorschach Hafen, rather than Rorschach main station.

I had an exquisite experience at the Gupf. The view, the more than delicious artisan food, hospitality and friendliness.
Even though that price-wise it is definitely not a backpacker friendly restaurant but we are talking fine dinning here! So if you are visiting this region I DO advise you to go this place. Personally I'd listed as an attraction!

What can be nicer than enjoying superb roasted chicken in a small, intimate restaurant which affords breath-taking views of the Lake of Constance and bordering Germany and Austria? Perhaps sitting outside in its garden on a warm summer evening.
The Treichli has a small but fine menu and the dishes are attractively served. The warm interior makes you feel almost like you are having dinner in someone’s home. And even if you aren’t able to bag a table at the front with that famous view, the ones in the back room are equally inviting.
The main room can get a bit loud, and parking is a challenge when the restaurant is full, so try to arrive early and enjoy an entire evening, savoring the relaxed atmosphere.

We are 'foodies' and recently moved to the region. We first thought that we give this Thai restaurant in Heiden a chance as it has been recommended to us. We have now been three times and gladly can report that the food, the service and the ambiance are all top notch. The gai Satay, the meat and prawn dishes were all extraordinary and the recommended white Argentian wine (per glass) was outstanding as well. We will certainly be back many times and can recommend the Thai Ambiente restaurant without hesitation.
