Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, County Durham, England. It is named after the castle around which it grew up. It is the main settlement in the Teesdale area, and is a popular tourist destination. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European fine and decorative arts in the North of England, housed in a "magnificent" 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most famous exhibit is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art includes work by Goya and El Greco.

Blagraves House is a charming historic 15th Century building. With its heavily beamed ceilings and large open fireplaces, it has been playing host to weary traveller and businessman alike for some 500 years. It has connections with Richard III. It is also recorded that Lieut. General Oliver Cromwell held Council here in 1648 were he was presented with burnt wine and oat cakes. Today our emphasis is on fresh food cooked to order using mainly local produce, accompanied with a comprehensive wine list and friendly unobtrusive service. So why not dine were Cromwell dined and experience the unique atmosphere of Blagraves House.
Went in with great expectations but was let down with the food and the price. Not enough light in the dinning room.

Meet up with friends for a quick bite to eat before heading for our weekend cottage, we normally stop at The Rose and Crown in Romaldkirk which is good but it was closed for a refurb so headed here after good reviews. Wasn’t disappointed, we choose the light menu sandwiches, chips, omelettes, bruschetta etc washed down with beer or wine..no complaints, food lovely, big portions though and reasonably priced, think we’ll be back. Dinner menu also looked good.

Visited The Crown for the 2nd time this month and it never disappoints. Atmosphere was chilled and service quick and friendly. We had the king prawns and scotch egg to start (both extremely tasty) and then the goats cheese soufflé and steak, again both beautiful and very filling. Recommended for a special celebration or just because you don’t feel like cooking yourself, The Crown will look after you.

Nestled in Barnard Castle's beautiful ancient artisan quarter, below the Market Cross is a charming, inviting, comfortable restaurant offering sophisticated, vibrantly flavoured, subcontinental cuisine of real style and taste. The menu features authentic, traditional favourites as well as creative dishes all made with the freshest ingredients. For those with an eye towards light, healthier eating we also offer our famous low calorie (yet authentic Indian) option of all our curries. The Merchant attracts a knowledgeable and loyal clientele who come back time and again for the fine food with exceptional friendly service. The Bengal Merchant is one of Barnard Castle's treasures and a perfect choice for exotic meals with friends & loved ones in a warm, cosy and romantic setting. For those with something to celebrate we also have a separate, newly refurbished function room too.
We had previously eaten in The Bengal Merchant and were impressed so decided to go again. We were not disappointed. The food was as good as I remember and everything came freshly prepared and piping hot. My husband said his dish had a unique and excellent flavour. Chad who appeared to be in charge the evening we were there was attentive and did a great job, as did the waiter and young waitress who served us. My only 2 small complaints would be that I asked for an extra mild Korma as I can't even take pepper on food. This was delivered and was delicious - however, I had ordered mushroom rice which came heavily spiced. This was not made clear when I told the waiter about my aversion to spice. My husband swapped his Pilau rice which saved the situation. Our only other small complaint is that the restaurant was very cold. Even after eating we felt cold - extra heating at this time of year is definitely needed. All in all though a good eating experience. We would recommend
