Taverna Aptera specialises in traditional home-cooking and is recommended in the Rough Guide to Crete. Open from 10.00am for breakfast through to the evening serving a full menu including a variety of vegetarian dishes.
We had 2 evenings here and had a great time each night.Excellent service made to feel like a local .The food, both Fish and local dishes are superb.Good value to boot. All fresh locally sourced , yes you can tell! The atmosphere is fabulous too, the way it curves around the village square , well lit but not garish.Looks and feels ,and tastes like a Taverna should be .Weekends there is live music in the square so all 3 village venues benefit from this.Worth a repeat visit any evening .

An original museum from stone that started being built in 1990 using bulk stones from th Lefka Ori. A harmonius union of nature and traditions of Crete,of yesterday and today. Share important moments of your life(Weddings,Christenings,Engagements,Birthdays) with your friends and loved ones and only tradiotional and contemporary dishes.
Love this place and have visited it several times during the day over the past few years and always enjoyed looking at what can only be described as the art of the place. Eaten there numerous times and always had excellent authentic Greek food. This time we visited on an evening and it did not fail. As always, excellent food and the atmosphere there on a night is marvellous

Called in late afternoon when it was very quiet but most of the seaside tables were booked for later arrivals.
Service was very good. We shared the cod in tempura batter, sardines and a half Greek salad. Absolutely delicious. Finished with a complimentary melon and grapes.
Very enjoyable late afternoon by the sea.

A place someone should visit when in Chania, with excellent taste of food, great portions, very good prices, friendly environment, quick service, surrounded by big old trees which create enormous shade.
The owner, Giannis, is an awesome guy who makes you feel like home.
If you are in Chania, don't miss it!

Love this authentic Italian restaurant located next to the highway close to Souda, hidden behind trees and nature, Don Rosario is a delightful surprise.
All pasta are home made, and the taste is leaving no doubt that this was prepared by a true Italian chef.
Also recommnedable is their wines, which at an affordable rate, is very high quality.
Worth a visti!

You will need to book on a Saturday or Sunday. The food is all made by the owner's mother and is really delicious.Try the cheese pies or stuffed pepper. The beef stifado and rabbit stifado are fantastic.Free raki and dessert and all at a very reasonable price. You will sit under the shady vines and flowers for the setting.

We were looking forward to eating here, as the restaurant was highly rated on trip advisor. What a disappointment. The courgette fritters to start were fine. The beef stifado was poor; served on a pile of under-cooked chips ( I would have preferred Greek oven roasted potatoes but wasn't given a choice), the sauce, which should have been rich and tomato flavoured was thin , watery and lacked in flavour. Overall , a very unappetising plate of food. Not sure how it earned its high rating.

We stayed in Gavalochori, just up the hill from Almyrida, a popular beach town. The main street is backed by many tavernas and restaurants. We were fortunate that someone told us about Icarus. It certainly exceeded his recommendation!
Godan was the primary person working tables and front of house. He was friendly and helpful in recommending food to us (and we ate there quite a few times). Great ice cold beer, tables directly on a deck on the beach and amazing food! Everything we ate there was fantastic — Greek salad, youvetsi, meatballs, lamb sealed in parchment, bean purée, house platter, loukaniko, all amazing and delicious.
Prices were quite reasonable for such terrific food and the beer was delicious and always ICE cold! Also, lounges on the beach for dining patrons was a nice perk!
I am happy to wholeheartedly recommend Icarus Taverna as likely being one of — if not THE — top taverna in Almyrida!

A wonderful Taverna at the beachside in Kalives Crete. Although known for their great pizzas, the owners, Giorgos and Stella, provide some of the best food available along with a friendly Devil may care attitude to whatever anyone might want to get up to. Lots of fun all year round. Come join us!
We enjoyed the food in this place, especially the II Forno salad which is absolutely huge, so if you're having it as a starter, make sure you know it's big enough for two people. The menu has pictures of the meals which was quite funny as it came handy for my husband who was generally put out by the fact that Cretan menus have such small description (eg. rabbit in the oven, lamb in red wine- and that's it!), so it was helpful for him :)

If you are looking for a true insight into Cretan food, then you should really must visit our traditional "HAROKOPOS" taverna located on the main square of Plaka village. just two kilometers from Almyrida. We are open all year round. Our family taverna provides a true experience of local cuisine with all our family involvement. The igredients we use in cooking our specialties are from the region. Some of our specialties are made with fresh vegetables from our garden and meat from our small farm. Our chef, Mrs Argyro, cooks every day a new delicious plate.
Had a lovely meal here. The Hostess was just amazing and works really hard to give the customers individual attention. It gets very busy, so get there early!
