i am totally amazed of todays experience in this charming restaurant. The chef came to every table, chatted and took orders.
the staff is totally professional, friendly and have a smile in their faces.
the location is amazing. cant wait to be there in summer time to sit outside and enjoy the view over the vipava valley
it was not a problem to bring my dog wilma with me.
the quality of food you get offered is amazing. every dish is like a piece of art.
last but not least - the prices are more than acceptable. it is more than in normal restaurants bur if you go for slow food and high end you would expect minimum twice the amount.
all in all a perfect time there. that is why we immediatelly made a reservation for my bday kn june.

My wife and I stayed in Majerija for one night while visiting the Vipava region. We had a tasting menu with wine pairings while there. We would highly recommend it and would love to go back.
The restaurant is in the small village of Slap. There isn't much in the village other than a few houses. Majerija sits overlooking the village and valley. The rooms are underground, which keeps them cool. We visited in the height of a heatwave and the rooms were comfortable. The room was spotless, nicely designed and had a lovely shower.
The restaurant seemed to be fully booked. Everyone was seated inside because they were afraid of rain coming that evening. I gather that on clear evenings you can sit outside. We had a tasting menu which was just delicious. There was a range of fish, meat and vegetable dishes. Where possible they try to use local ingredients. We could hear other tables in the room adapting the menu to dietary requirements so you can do this if you wish. We went with the wine pairings which were all Slovenian wines and complemented the meal well.
The one night stay, with the tasting menu, wine and a bottle of wine that we bought there came to 240e. So not a cheap meal but certainly worth it in my book. I hope to be back again.

When a place is self-sufficient with ingredients supplies, this can be a drawback - less choice, potentially lower quality. Well, not at Arkade Cigoj. The fact that they raise their own pigs (the hairy mangalica variety) and cows (black angus) results in control over the feed and overall conditions in which the animals live. The same goes with the vegetables and this is then what you get served on your plate.
We have started with excellent cold cuts (prosciutto, lardo, two types of salami), accompanied with some morsels, based on cold cuts (e.g. prunes wrapped in prosciutto and then grilled). Bread is of course home-made, and there are a few interesting types of it.
Soups were of the same quality with a special cudos going to pearl barley soup, a local speciality, slow cooked, with prosciutto bones joining the vegetables in the pot.
Tagliatelle with capon were gentle in taste (perhaps a bit too gentle), but gnocchi with radicchio and sausage were perfect. The same goes for the platter of mangalica pork meat (tenderloin, sausage, slow braised cheeks, fried pulled pork). Along with the meat came a variety of vegetables (mashed potatoes, spinach, savoy cabbage, turnip) and it was evidend that they were all home grown and prepared with lots of care. The turnip itself is a speciality since they preserve it whole (not grated as it is usually done) on red grape skins, giving it a special flavour.
And yes, Cigoj also makes its own wine. Both that we have tried were very good, but perhaps this is a point where self sufficiency could be avoided by adding some other local wines to the wine list.
The desserts were not bad but definitely not as good as the rest of the food.
Price tag is very wallet-friendly - about 20 EUR/person with wine included.
The bonus at the end of the meal: you can buy most of their produce (including a gread red wine vinegar) and take them with you to enjoy until your next visit to them. We will certainly be making a next one, definitely in the summer when you can eat al fresco as well.

We really had a geat filet on yesterday evening! Porcini mushrooms and meat tartare as starters were delicious. Professional service and a rich bottle of sparkling Rebula completed the dinner. Meat is clearly this restaurant' signature. Just avoid staying too close to the horses fence to avoid after smells. Enjoy!

Tom and I went to visit the Vipava Winery during our travels through Croatia and Slovenia a couple of months ago. Boy, do they ever know how to do a wine tasting!!
First we toured the shop and saw the many types of wine that Vipava makes.
Next we went into the beautiful gostlina(restaurant) next door. The room is oval and lovely. The private tables for tasting face the center of the room. We were told to select any two bottles that we wanted to taste. Our waiter was Alex. He was very nice and easy to talk to. Upon being seated, he served us each a glass of sparkling wine which he said was the "hello".
Then we were served a delicious homemade spread of cheese, mustard and herbs. This was accompanied by crusty homemade bread. We tasted the first bottle of wine. After that, Alex brought our a large plate of thinly sliced ham and assorted cheeses. He said that the ham was a speciality because it was baked in bread. We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it, We then were offered the tasting of wine from the second bottle. Both wines were very nice.
During the time that we were there Alex kept refilling our glasses. Both bottles were ours to drink and to enjoy as much of as we wanted.
We expected to spend about a 1/2 hr. at the winery. Instead we spent almost three. It was one of our trip highlights.
The cost of this tasting was 10 euros each. When we went back to the shop to buy a bottle of one of our tastings, we found that the cost was 19 euros.
What a wonderful afternoon. It was a great deal and a real treat! If ever given the opportunity, we will go back.

We have been coming back to this restaurant for years, when we decide to eat out. Always friendly service, good advise on what to have, and let's not forget their wine and prosciutto. I always take some prosciutto to go, as it's just divine.
Meals have always been tasty, wodnerfull for a group of people, or a cloes company, we have celebrated a birthday there a few years back, and thequality hjasn't changed since then. It's still top notch!

We had very good lunch here with my friends. I had beef soap, where could be any vegetable and meat, there were only noodles. After soap I had spaghetti with tomato sauce and proscciuto. Wasn´t bad but something special neither. My boyfriend had scampi here...MoreThank you for all!

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Italy. The service was excellent and our vegetable pizza was very nice (for me I think the base could have been crisper, but my other half was v happy with it) We also had fresh orange juice. This was only ok, too pulpy, maybe just not the best oranges. . If you're in the area then it's worth a visit. (1 large pizza, 2 fresh orange, 2 ice cream €11.5).

The restaurant is an absolute surprise in this part of Slovenia. Good value for food, tremendously nice design of the place, it can serve family needs (toys and other facilities), it can be used for business meetings, having late night drink .. They have nice sunny outdoor Seating ...
Only minus I can find is this, that there are not many guests. You can see this in that way, that things are not used by many many people and there is dust here and there - hard to describe.
In general - definitely a place worth visiting!

If you are staying in Vipava and the day is hot this might be the place to visit. Colder surrounding due to mountain elevation, friendly servants and home food.
