Štanjel (pronounced [ˈʃtaːnjɛu̯]; Italian: San Daniele del Carso) is a village in the Municipality of Komen in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It is located on the Karst Plateau overlooking the Vipava Valley. In the 17th century it was fortified to defend it against Ottoman raids. It was heavily damaged during World War II and it has been slowly rebuilt since.

we were pleasantly surprised when we were there. Nice old city on a hill. The lady in the reception was not ready to advise, but then quickly was corrected by the guide.Thank you. They could take better care of the gallery. Ferrari's garden is really worth a visit and also the whole city on the hill. I recommend to see the spring

Štanjel is the best garden from the thirties in Slovenia. It is work of architect Maks Fabiani. He used Carstic terraces on SE part of a picturesque village to set garden with trees, walkways, way around the village. Carst (Kras) is without enough water, so he added a system of cisterns and built a small pond in the middle. Best thing is that garden is open and you can enter from two sides and walk wherever you want. In clear days you admire Panorama to Nanos and hills all around. You can walk around with children. No special care for tourists; no souvenirs, no drinks in the garden. Village is also partly sleepy partly inhabited. Try to find food in villages around. You can walk on Fabiani trail to Kobdilj, too.

Perfect! :)Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for all your kindness and for ranking us so highly. Great to hear your overall experience. Yours sincerely Ivo Kobal

Castle was one of the most impressive buildings in Štanjel. Now it is partly ruin and partly local museum with a bar – small restaurant in ground floor. Paintings and prints of Lojze Spacal are the main attraction in the castle in upper floors. They also have some temporary Exhibitions and sometimes organize Concerts.

I really have all the best to say about them. They have showed us all the wine cellars, even special "wine cave".
They even took us to see the castle - Štanjel. It was 4 of us and they spent the whole day with us to show us around. We were served food and even homemade lemon cake.
Highly recommend!

This is just a possibility to find something as a souvenir. Honey is good but expensive. You can find some other souvenirs in a house 50 m to the left; mainly wooden plates with some pictures of the village. If you are choosy, some other souvenirs are in the castle and some informations in a tower near the church.
