This is a very nice church in late baroque stile with an history going back over thousands years. The position on an hill overlooking the valley and the Mountains ,is superb and the old farms surrounding it add to the bucolic setting. Inside there are very nice painting illustrating the early years of Jesus.

Me and my lovely girlfriend walked all up and down this valley. It was my 4th time there and her first. Regardless we both left Dorfertal considering it as our favorite place on earth!

This quaint chapel is one of many interesting features of walking in this valley, as is the adventurous walking up into the alps on very well marked paths. There are huts for refreshments and even overnight stays scattered around the valley and higher Mountains, some lifts to save the initial ascent in other areas. Stunning walking, get fit in amazing scenery.

Fascinating old church in the Matrei Valley.
What makes it special is that it has two altars , one over the other.
When you sit in the pews you can see them both.
The lower is dedicated to St Nikolaus and the upper is dedicated to St George.
You have an excellent view of the valley from the church which is situated at 1035 meters above sea level.

Austria's highest mountain and centrepiece of the High Tauern National Park You can approach the Grossglockner in many different ways: it is the highest mountain of the Alpine Republic, one of the most striking elevations in the Eastern Alps and the summit of passion for many a mountaineer. The mountain is also home to people, numerous animals and rare plants. The Glockner is cloaked in secrecy, is the stuff of legend and has great attractive power. It is an obstacle on the path from north to south, yet a place where it has been overcome through the millennia. Join us and get to know his majesty, the Grossglockner, in his numerous aspects!
The High Alpine Road is a toll road that is only open during particular times in the year (I would imagine inaccessible for the rest) and is an engineering marvel.
We were not so fortunate with the weather as the cloud base was quite low but did move along with a brisk wind and so if we sat for 10 minutes or so then we would eventually get the view (snap a picture) before it closed in again.
However, if you like driving exciting roads then this is one for you. There are 36 hairpins along this road that climbs up to the mountain and glacier that were the roads original purpose in 1935. With stopping in the area we were given a money off booklet at our hotel and so got the ticket price 12% cheaper and so it cost us €31.00 for the trip. Starting as you leave the town of Fusch behind and heading out towards Heiligenblut the road takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in Austria. It is a drivers and riders paradise.
Also make sure you take the offshoot Glossglockner Hockalpenstrabe to have a look at the mountain and spend some time around glacier (option to take a funicular to it) or get something to eat around the glass outlook post. There is a free muti-story car park here and also a museum and information center and you could easily spend a few hours here. There are also ten stopping places where information or Exhibitions are available covering all sorts from environmental to the history of the road build.
our favourite spot was station number five which was a slight offshoot up to the highest point. Here is where you will find the Edelweibhutte where accommodation is available and the lookout point is exceptional.
There are lots of places (well three or four) to eat although we chose the Gletscherrest Freiwandeck because it offered what we wanted at a very reasonable price and the views of Grobglockner out its windows were stunning.
There are also lots of walks. hikes, treks available off the road and plenty of places to pull in and just drink in the scenery.
Fun for all the family and a must do if you are in the area (just prey for a clear day).
