I am staying in Hinterbichl for 8 days and decided to go to Gasthof Islitzeralm for my evening meal, up to now the food has been great! Great value for your money as well. I am on a business trip which started off in Kandersteg in Switzerland where the food was a bit overpriced, so to pay €6,50 for a big plate of Spaghetti Bolognese is absolutely brilliant.

A genuine Austrian restaurant with Austrian specialties, own production of cheese, butter and own flesh and own grown vegetables. After 2 ½ hours of hiking you will be up to the restaurant with a breathtaking view and wonderful food and service of the staff. There are family members who work there. Very reasonably priced food and drink.

Restaurant with beer garden with great waterfall view, our products are sourced from local and Austrian manufacturers.
I can see that all the other reviews here are in another language, so hopefully this will be helpful to english speakers.
First and foremost: you must go here!!! This restaurant provided us with one of the best meals we had in the whole of our three month European trip! It is run by a lovely couple, and the staff are dressed in traditional Austrian clothing with not a hint of irony. The whole place is filled with locals, who come to watch the football and have a pint in the bar, or have a meal in the peaceful dining room. Yet, everyone speaks English and they were not at all unkind about our inability to speak German.
But the best part is the food! Tirolean food is an interesting hybrid of Austrian, German and Italian fare - you will find a lot of pasta set beside sausage dishes and a lot of cheese! It is to die for. If you come here, you have to pre-order the fondue a day in advance, and you wont regret it! It includes the meat which you cook in a heavenly broth, home-made dipping sauces, chips, salad and garlic bread! It is a feast for two if I ever saw one.
Oh, and leave some room for dessert, because they have some really delicious ice creams - try palatschinke, a traditional dish with a pancake and ice cream.
Do note that the fare is a little expensive - about 20 euros per person for the fondue. But this is usual, and it is worth it!

waiting for 1 hour for a simple pizza and pasta. In my pizza was a large piece of sharp plastic. if I would have swallowed it i would now have been in hospital! The taste of the pizza was not very good compared to a real italian pizza from, for example , La Puccia in Grado Italy. But of course that is a matter of taste. I can not recomment the pizza nor the pasta which had a verry thin taste. Curious was that the waitress talked to us with a german-italian accent, but to some local girls without any accent at all. As compensation my pizza was not added to the bill.

Winner of the "Genußwirt des Jahres 2011" awardIn Gottfried Steiner's award-winning restaurant, "Gasthaus Großvenediger" in Prägraten in the Virgen Valley region of East Tyrol, gourmet food and regional specialities are high on the menu. His wife Birgit and her team delight the guests with a wide range of specialities, such as mouth-watering game and fish dishes as well as sumptuous dishes from East Tyrol.Children have their own special colour-in menu to keep them amused. Warm and welcoming atmosphereWe have always had a great passion for gastronomy and we put our heart and soul into our business and try to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our guests that will make dining with us a truly special experience. At the end of the day, eating and drinking is one of the greatest and oldest cultural assets of all.Is there any greater pleasure than this? The first time Gottfried Steiner entered the mystery guest competition, he was awarded the title of best Tyrolean proprietor of the year "Tiroler Genuss Wirt des Jahres": "We wanted to present our house simply as it is, and this evidently also convinced the mystery tester."Sommelier and holder of the Diploma in Wines and Spirits from WSET, Gottfried Steiner has every right to be proud of a well-assorted wine list and a wide selection of spirits from the region. Of course, he can also be proud of the homemade apple and elderberry juice made by his wife, Birgit.opbve
We found this restaurant by accident while driving to our accommodation after a day's outing. The menu choice was wide, at reasonable prices, although not the cheapest. To find roast lamb on an Austrian menu is unusual, even more so when it's so tasty. My wife had the Wiener schnitzel, which was large and well-prepared. For dessert, I had the "fitness becher", with yoghourt ice cream and fruit. The fruit was all freshly prepared, a surprise as it is so often tinned. All in all a good experience, and we will hopefully return when we are in the area again.

We visited this restaurant with six other people. Although we had booked beforehand, the restaurant area is quite large and we had plenty of room. The staff were welcoming and spoke a certain amount of English. Food was good and plentiful. Would certainly go back again.

Fantastic choice of local Austrian dishes made of local supplies in a typical farm-type restaurant environment. At times even freshly hunted chamois can be ordered, a rare mountain specialty. Warm welcome and kind service. Great value for money. Will return tonight!

Well apparently this is not the right place looking for Michelin Star kind of kitchen.
But if you are looking for Austria's traditional dishes you are at the right place. You find a selection of dishes freshly cooked from fresh ingredients and well served. Vegetables and meat are cooked to the right point as ordered.
Typically you have to watch out as in particular the dishes served in pans are really hot out if the stove. Size of the dishes goes ok even if you are hungry after hiking or skiing - though don't expect oversized portion - it is just about right.
The service is really nice and and very fast. If you are showing up with some more people, a lager family or so, they just try to get you seated as nice as possible, if space is left. And for the smaller ones they have kids menus available.
Wine card I've not tested.
Price of the dishes are very fair and affordable.
Interior style is the kind of "Austrian rustique" - which is not my personal favor but it is all nice and clean.
Situated is the restaurant left from the Main Street if you go downhill but you have to watch out for the signs. Good thing it is still in heart of Matrei and even after a few more beer there is no need for a car as it is walking distance to any place within Matrei.

Every day on our ski trip me and my wife went there to drink gluhwine and espresso and we sit outside on super comfortable chairs with sheep skins....

On the outskirts of Sankt Jakob in Defereggental, well worth a visit, but be sure to book a table! We experienced a warm welcome, and the good athmosphere, as well as the excellent service went on throughout the evening we enjoyed dinner in Sandwirt. The food was what I would call excellent local, brilliant fresh ingredients an a well prepared meal! The overall impression really raised our spirits, despite of wet snow falling outside. We had rumpsteak, and the meat was second to none! My wife tried an equally excellent chicken dish. The wine selection was, well, to be honest quite narrow, but the local red was ok. If you should happen to end up in St Jakob, however, don't miss this place for dinner. Oh, btw, closed Sundays.
