We did a 3-day birdwatching tour in the Danube Delta after finishing a Danube river cruise in Tulcea. We had booked this tour on the internet through Romania Tours / Nordic Tours, but the actual tour was done by a guide from Chettusia. We went out on a quaint and beautiful old 'tub', moving slowly through the countless channels and canals of the delta. Our guide knew the delta like the back of his hand and, being the author of a beautiful book on delta birds, he also knew every bird in sight. Even though early September was not the best time for birdwatching, as many migrating birds had already left, we saw many different species, such as pelicans, various herons, swans, terns, eagles, falcons, and many more. We stayed 2 nights in a guest house in Mila 23 in the middle of the delta, which was very pleasant.
Our boat was big enough for about 6-8 people, but my husband and I were the only passengers plus our captain/guide and a cook. The lunches on board were great and served beautifully. It was a fabulous experience for nature lovers and bird photographers.

This small but well laid out museum/aquarium is a must for anyone intending to explore the Danube Delta as it gives a detailed explanation of the flora and fauna of the area as well as the chance to get up close and personal with some aquatic creatures, though not all of them are to e found in either the Danube or the Black Sea!
The visitors' map of Tulcea with which we were provided on our cruise ship had this museum incorrectly located, so it is worth checking with the tourist information people that you are heading for the right place.

The fortress has a great view over the surroundings which are beautiful. The climate encourages the growth of interesting plants all around, a fact also described in the small museum inside the premises which tells the story of the place. The attraction is accessible by car, with 7 minutes walk afterwards, much better than few years ago. The ticket is cheap and the ruins are impressive, even if the fortress was not a particularly large one.

This is by far the most beautiful church I have seen in Rumania. It is almost 200 years old. The priest was very friendly. Opposite the church is the monestry, where the monks live. Beautiful place. It is worth the trip.

The church building is modern, and the decoration is correspondingly new. Two royal portraits on the west wall were overpainted when the country shed its royalty - but you can still see the outline of the older pictures. The grounds are worth exploring - when we were there we saw an abandoned stork's nest now used by several sparrows. A walk to the lake is a pleasant way to end the visit - not a special lake, but through the orchard of the monastery, and there may be unusual birds on the lake.

This monument is located on a hill overlooking Tulcea. Visiting it means getting a nice view of the city and of the Danube. It's within walking distance from the centre, so might be worth a walk.

Celic-Dere Monastery is located in a lovely rural setting in a clearing in a wooded area. Founded in 1838-1840, the church was built starting in 1901. To reach the church there is quite a long hill to walk up, but the view from the top is worth it. The interior of the small church is beautifully decorated. To the right of the alter is “The icon that cleans itself” which legend says was brought by a soldier. He told the monks that even though it was blackened, one day it would clean itself, and the eyes of Christ would open. Half of the icon is now light, the other half dark. A note to travellers; If you are looking for a WC this is not the place to consider looking for one.

This tiny museum is located right in the city centre and is worth visiting - it will take less than half an hour and costs less than 1 euro.
There is a temporary exhibition about fairytales, but the most interesting is the permanent exhibition, which presents the clothing and objects people of different ethnicities used. Only so can one understand the multicultural society that once existed here, in Dobrogea.

Museum of History and Archaeology is located in Independence Monument Park, on the hill were former ancient fortress Aegyssus once existed . In the exhibition are restored into a modern vision aspects of economic history, cultural, religious, political and military within Danube Delta region from antiquity until XIX century .
The "Treasure North Dobrogea" permanent exhibition opened in 2007, presents thematically, in a chronological sequence, exceptional pieces owned by the museum : monetary treasures, ornaments of gold and silver clothing, accessories, religious objects and old books.
One of the monetary treasures that can be seen in the museum was discovered near the village were my grandparents live :)
