Suggest before you go, look up the fascinating history of this baroque fairytale, now in advanced stages of restoration following neglect under the GDR. The lakeside setting is superb. The Gardens alone worth a visit. The inside very well presented. The inside restaurant was closed when we were here (though you only find out after following signs upstairs, downstairs etc). Unless desperate give the tempting outside cafe / tea rooms a miss - the deeply unmotivated staff are presumably civil (!) servants. But as M would put it, very well worth a detour.

As every seasoned tourist knows Europe is peppered with churches and cathedrals. This one on a scale of grandness lies somewhere in the middle. Since Schwerin was not bombed during the war it maintains its grandeur. What sets it apart from many others however, is the wonderful carillon that rings throughout the town.

The Pfaffenteich is one of Schwerin's many lakes and sits neatly between the main station and the city centre. A stroll around the lake is worth the effort for the splendid architecture of local buildings and in particular the former city electriciuty works and municipal baths, both now offices. A brief boat trip operates two days per week in summer and on public holidays.

An absolute MUST visit place. The entire area places its inhabitants into carefully designed environment, beautifully planned out for visitors to get a good look at the animals. While walking along the paths you find many stations for interactive entertainment not only for kids. There is just so much to do, it takes a day to get through, so there is a place where humans can eat. The Zoo also organizes events throughout the year which are always favored by a huge crowd.

We checked out the whole museum including the museum store / cafe. Overall the Museum is offering a descent, but not spectacular collection of artwork of classic (starting about 17th. century) and contemporary periods. Very impressive was the presentation of a recent body of work by German artist Guenther Uecker, titled "Neue Wustrower Tuecher", which was presented in the recently opened new addition to the Museum.

The park that surrounds this statue is peaceful and lovely. Franz was the Grand Duke that reigned from 1842-1883. He was a difficult person to please when he began the process of "designing" the castle on the island and it took many years before he approved the plans.

Walk slowly by the instruction and you can watch, hear and even smell the old days. They keep the spice garden running and the oven. My all time favorite is the village school.

We had a day or so in Schwerin and naturally gravitated to the market square. Its a sweet little square - the town hall, a large white collenaded building and litle cafes line the edges giving the place a pleasant vibe. Nice view of the spire of the Cathedral in the North Western corner of the square. All in all a lovley place to stop for a coffee and a snack

Besides the varied and extensive shopping opportunities the Center provides an excellent opportunity for lunch, refreshments or even dinner (it is open till 8pm!). The food court offers a wide range of regional specialties from local butcher shops (cold cuts, sandwiches, bratwurst etc) and bakeries, coffee Shops, (Italian) ice cream parlours (a traditional must go in Eastern Germany, nobody knows why) and last but not least Asian ("Asia Hung") and Middle East ("Tigris" - 3.floor) fast food, and - it shouldn’t come a s a surprise - a MacDonald fast food restaurant. The Center has ample parking in a multi-storey parking structure (first hour free) and it is situated exactly in the center of Schwerin– an ideal base for further exploring the City.

It would be very easy to overlook this small, but very interesting
preserved water mill. I have seen restored water mills before,
however, this one is unusual in that it was used for cutting
stones for use in construction. I found it very interesting and
a visit is a must for anyone interested in industrial history.
It can be found on the edge of the Schloss Gardens.
