Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel

Reviewed By RHAHJ - Nijmegen, The Netherlands

This basilica has a dome covering, which is not very common in the low countries. Another peculiar aspect is that this pilgrim's site is still very much alive, not just for tourists but more so for the religious-minded. There are many worshippers in the benches. Nevertheless tourists can go around through an outer ring of rooms without disturbing the worshippers too much. There are some nice religious paintings there. In the basement there is an exhibition space with free entry. It was about saints - sculptures and their stories. I didn't fancy that too much - one can search for these things on the internet.

Averbode Abbey

Reviewed By better_beer - Brussels, Belgium

Sitting on the border between Vlams-Brabant and Limburg Belgium is a rather interesting Abbey which is part of the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré. That would be the Abbey of Averbode. Sitting astride several nice paths, bikeways and in a wooded and pastoral area it is a very peaceful and apart from the few hints of current times could easily be still in the 18th Century.
Apparently a case of on again and off again for the church the grounds and the abbey due to wars, fires and other problems seems to be now an on again affair. The church is a magnificent work of stone and is in its own right very pretty.
In keeping with what seems to be the tradition, this abbey now produces a beer and a cheese as well though we made it back to the gift shop just a bit too late to have purchased any to enjoy. The grounds have what appears to be a new reflecting pool in the center and it offers a great spot to contemplate or at least compose some nice photos.
At least one other major building is undergoing internal restoration it appears.

La Nostra Vita

I really liked our visit at La nostra vita. Very friendly people. Also the heath session were very nice, these are included in the prices and given by someone professional who really know what he is talking about. It is a smaller Sauna complex what makes it all more personal. Go on days that it is not so busy, then it's really nice! Also nice lounge room where you can sit and enjoy a book by the wooden fire!

Begijnhof Diest

Reviewed By OlderGuy1956 - Dorchester, United Kingdom

We love the begijnhofs / beguinages of Belgium. A sense of peace mixed with fascinating architecture and history pervade these places. The Diest Begijnhof is slightly different. It's bigger than most, and the fact that cars are allowed in takes away the peace of the area (as does the fact that the church is under repair). However, this did not diminish the experience. Well, well worth a visit.

Bona Vida Cocktail & Lounge Bar

Reviewed By A TripAdvisor Member

Vlooybergtoren

Reviewed By peetersr - Gingelom, Belgium

Not a very original caption, I agree, but how else to describe this oddity? One of the more recent attractions added in our neighbourhood and one of these unbelievable surprises we still get in our home country, sometimes only a few miles away from where we live. The “Vlooyberg Tower” in Tielt-Winge is an iron stairway built on one of the hills. Weighing in at 30 tons and standing just over 11 m tall, it’s a gravity defying iron construction. Climb to the top and you can see for miles around. In fact the story of the Vlooyberg Tower started a few years ago. On the hill to the west of the Vlooyberg was a wooden lookout tower about four meters in height. Aside from all the youth of Tielt, unfortunately this tower also attracted vandals who irreparably damaged it by setting it on fire. The municipality decided to replace the small wooden tower with a new, monumental object that would be able to withstand the ravages of time. Job well done I would say!
And while you’re in the neighbourhood also visit the Horst Castle. This moated castle in the green valley of the Wingebeek, stands among the Hageland hills, dates back to the 15th century. The former living rooms, made of brick and sandstone, are mostly from the 16th and 17th centuries. A couple of the rooms also have stucco ceilings created by J.C. Hansche. This is also the “home” of the well-known (world-famous in Flanders) comic book character “The Red Knight”. A special guided tour for children means guaranteed excitement and adventure. A Knights’ Tournament is also held annually. And there are some spectacularly beautiful hikes around the castle. Might want to wear your wellies though as you’re in a part of the Hageland where the underground is soaked with water.
If you walk west (follow the HORST CASTLE WALK) away from the Castle you’ll see the splendid and romantic 17 th century parsonage. Both the Castle & the parsonage are Heritage Sites. End your hike at the Horst Castle grounds again so you can taste a pancake or savour an ice-cream and quench your thirst with a delicious locally brewed Horst Beer at the Wagenhuis tavern.

Ten Kapittelberg

Reviewed By PeterHarvey - Norwich UK

Belgian wine anyone ? Karl and his son Jan at Kappitelberg has been making wine here since the 70's and are the biggest producer in the Hageland region; near Leuven. They grow a variety of germanic and modern hybrids in a location which is way further north than any French wine region. But to taste and buy it you really have to come to the domaine - ideally on a Sunday - as here is a well-kept secret seemingly only known by locals who flock to their tavern enjoy the wines served by family members. For €12 they offer a very generous tasting of 8 of their wines, which include 2 methode traditionelle fizzes, dry whites, rosé, off dry whites and a surprisingly full bodied red from dornfelder and pinot noir.

Kasteel van Horst

This castle from the 1400s was an absolute amazing experience to see! It was unfortunate that the castle was closed due to repairs but experiencing it from the outside was just as good.
The adjoining restaurant and brewery was also amazing and highly recommend their local beer "Horst Bier"
