Well worth the drive, this national preserve (yeah, Mexico,) is a treasure. Rent a tour boat for 3-4 hours and explore the flora, fauna and aves. Even though we were there when most flamingos have flown to Cuba or Miami, still saw some prancing in the salt water and spied egrets, pelicans and others. Loved the mud baths and coming back to a "beach" across from the pier to wash off in the warm water. Recommend you get a bilingual guide if someone in your party does not speak Spanish. Best to go in the spring when the flamingos fly overhead like a setting sunset. It will bring you to your knees.

This was my second visit here. The first was last year, with Rio Lagartos Adventures/Diego Nunes and family. We paid $80US, I think, and while the tour was excellent, the guide who took us spoke limited English, and didn't know the English names for most of the birds. He had a good eye, spotting many birds I'd have missed, but if you don't know the names, it does detract from the experience somewhat. This year, the same outfit wanted $140US, so we decided to try someone else. What we got was a guide with much better knowledge, better English and an equally good eye. We paid 800 pesos. Basically, you can get a very similar experience for less than half the price if you're prepared to go beyond the biggest and best advertised operator. Just wander around the seafront area and you will be approached by numerous boat owners. I suspect they all know their stuff, it's just a matter of choosing one who can communicate with you, in my case that meant speaking good English. I didn't haggle especially, so you may get it even cheaper if you're on a budget. I was told Diego Nunes employs some of the locals to take boats out, and some of them aren't necessarily the most experienced. If you're lucky enough to get him or his son, it will be great, but you may not, and it will be way more expensive regardless.

Its like 3.5 hrs drive from Cancun, 7 hrs round trip drive is worth. There is pink lake, orange lake and green lake. There is no GPS address for this spot, We put Las Coloradas on our google maps and follow route. As you reach the spot, You will see lot of local tour ppl standing. They will charge you 300 pesos for tour. Do take the tour as the tour guide will show you nice spots like dead floating pool, mud facial place, take you closer to flamigos, brine shrimp, red plankton, other sea reptiles and walk to other spots. Colors of lake depends on the weather, Avoid cloudy day, Clear and sunny day will display more vibrant colors.

Exciting boat trips, among mangrove channels within the reserve of Ria Lagartos, where you can be surprised observing different birds, crocodiles, meet the incredible pink lagoons of the coloradas and enjoy a relaxing white clay spa surrounded by flamingos in their natural habitat .
¡no te arrepentiras...¡

If you want a really good tour and affordable, how crocodiles live and breed visit this farm.
The owners take pride and respect to the crocodiles. They rescue the crocodiles breed them and then resettle them eventually in Ría Lagartos National Park.
The tour started as a whole adventure for the kids and us. We even experienced the birth of a crocodile out of its egg!
We could see and feed all the different sizes and ages of crocodile. Of course the ones bred in captivity are better to handle than the wild ones.
It's a whole project, as I understood it and everything is taken care of. From trash recycle (much needed in Yucatan) to the optimal treatment and resettlement of the animals.
I recommend it highly and it's on the highway to Rio Lagartos. Tour takes 40minutes. Very friendly staff! That makes the difference!

This was the best birding tour I have had anywhere, especially to see the Flamingos. I highly recommend this tour business. We spent the night and toured on the water the first afternoon and on land the following morning. The two were very different of course, and both were really terrific. We saw many birds, I think about 80 species in all, many of which we are not able to see at home. The rooms were comfortable though not fancy and the food at the restaurant was very good.
