This is really very nice museum, many things ( related to the motorcycle culture) to see and observe. Quite opposite The first impression the city gives when you get off the train. You can come here from Pisa in 15 min. by train and visit the museum, and after that go to the main street of the city to sit in some pizza place. Pleasant.

Giovanni, a college professor , is the very knowledgeable & gracious guide for this tour which is only held on weekends. We had people from several countries on our tour, and he repeated the information in both English, and Italian so everyone could understand. The history of the tower is fascinating, and the views are beautiful!

I’ve been here so many times I’ve lost count. First used to call in with Italian colleagues as we travelled in regularly to our project near Peccioli. The coffee, pastries and sandwiches are all excellent and well displayed. You can even have a beer if you wish and are not the driver.
Don’t be put off by the plastic tablecloths outside, the service and smiles outweighs this small detail. I will be back.

We visited here with young children and older grandparents. Used to b a monastery, very interesting facade now home to a small aquarium and dinosaur exhibition. Personally found the aquarium section a little disappointing, I've seen more Koi carp at my local garden centre. But overall there is Lots to see. Lots of archeological items too. We could certainly have stayed longer but had time constraints on this visit. Wonderful big gift shop with extremely good informative/educational books about nature and the environment for children.

Come tutti gli anni, mi trovo sempre al ultimo minuto per i regali di Natale. E come tutti gli anni passo da Azzurra (la titolare), che inventa sempre qualcosa di unico e originale! Consigliatissimo a chiunque, e in qualunque periodo dell'anno. Dal regalo di compleanno alla calza per la befana, dalla pasqua (tantissime uova di cioccolato da poter scegliere) al semplice anniversario. Dimenticavo: negozio dove potete trovare i "ciuccini"!!!

Castello dei Vicari

The Castello dei Vicari is situated on a hill that was inhabited from ancient times. The first document relating to its existence dates back to 1043 when a plot of land belonging to the Castle of Lari was sold for a sword. It was the site of the Pisan captaincy between the 12th and 14 th centuries, but came to prominence after it was captured by Florence in the 15th century and became the site of a Vicariate overseen by Florence. Despite the many alterations, modifications and overlaps that were made to the fortress, visitors can still see in its present aspect the many ways that it was used: as a fortress, prison, home of the Vicar with his "family" and court. To name only the most important ones, since the most observant and enquiring visitors will not miss the more ancient archaeological traces and the other less apparent aspects which are just as important and contribute to making the Castle of Lari a rare if not unique example of its kind in Tuscany and beyond. The museum route inside the Castello dei Vicari (the Castle of the Vicars) has a new layout creating a whole new visit in which technology is combined with an illustrated and educational system that takes you on a discovery of a fortress that was the centre of control in Medici Tuscany and home to a Florentine vicariate for over four centuries. The users take the lead and decide what they want to take a closer look at and how to interact with the numerous multimedia applications along the route through the use of multi-touch tablets, multimedia educational games, holographic figures in period costume and multiple projections. A story and a journey of discovery suited to even very young children thanks to the short films and dedicated applications.

I gave this a five-star rating not because of the tour (which I didn't even know you could take; the signage isn't great and the few people there were definitely not very interested in tourists). My rating is for the views you get from the top and the wonderful, "right out of central casting" little town complete with winding stone streets, beautiful window baskets, old doors and shutters, and groups of older men just sort of sitting around and talking. And oh, the views. From the top definitely but also from all sorts of little places on the way down. I've always imagined being in such a place and Lari made me understand what a walled down in Tuscany was really all about. Decent gelato and a cool, old pasta factory too.

Yes, visiting this museum you get that feeling of no-upgrades for long, long time.
Some sections look like old 19th Century collections with wooden reliquaries and type-writer labels under the specimens. And... we loved it!
All together it was a great experience. Some of the specimens are breath taking to be honest. The building itself, the Certosa would be worth visiting. Not to mention the biggest surprise, the best experience we had in Calci, right at the end of our visit:
The whales room.
It is simply incredible, with full skeleton of several whales (both toothed whales and baleen whales) and the full windows around it making the view spectacular.
All together, a really enjoyable experience
