Cachoeiras dos Dragoes

Much more than just tourism, it's an experience! 40 km far from the center of Pirenopolis, in the area that also includes the Eisho-ji Zen Monastery, the 8 Waterfalls surprise on a trail in deep contact with nature and its beauties. Each waterfall, with its dragon-related mythology, invites everyone who wants to experience a special tour.

Reviewed By Joop V - Ede, The Netherlands

To get there is already an adventure. Its a rough off road, with river crossings. Following a track of about 4 kilometers, you will meet 8 Waterfalls of the dragons, divided over 3 rivers. One even more beautiful then the other, each having their own dragon story. The track leads you trough beautiful landscapes, but includes some steep parts. Depending of the time you spend to swim or bath, it will take you 4 to 5 hours. You will start and end on the same place, a parking with a ticket house with and toilets. There is nothing to buy, so you have to bring your own food or drinks, and on the track there are no waste bins, so bring your waste back to the ticket house. Have a wonderful hiking day.

Santuario Vagafogo

Daily 9am-5pm

Reviewed By Jim W

Vagafogo's brunch was incredible! The home-made breads and rolls were outstanding. Almost all were local products from the Brazilian cerrado. The jams and chutneys were out-of-this world. The fruit, yogurt and granola were delicious. The mango and cashew fruit juice they served tasted great. And the home-made whipped cream for the dessert waffle was heavenly. The owners were gracious hosts who kindly explained the cerrado delicacies and which ones tasted best together. All-in-all it was a unique and unforgettable experience.

Centro Historico de Pirenopolis

Reviewed By la_viajera_constanta - Brussels, Belgium

This is a quaint and well-preserved historic town about 160 kilometres drive from Brasilia. Depending on traffic and road closures it could be anything from 1.5 to 3 hours (it took us 3 hours due to a road closure and detour, which according to our guide, are frequent).
The town is pleasant to wander around, and on a Monday in October it was quiet. The restored church is worth a visit, although check opening hours as I think it is only open from 2pm.
Some nice restos to lunch in and craft shops to browse.
There is also a river which looks very inviting, but you shouldn't swim in that as it is polluted - even though some people do... In any case, to get the most of the day trip try to visit some of the Waterfalls nearby - not sure it is worth such a long drive for the town alone.

I am not exactly a super-fan of motorcycles, but I have to admit that visiting the Museu Rodas do Tempo inspired me about the two-wheeler world! Great place, great collection and the staff was really interested in sharing their knowledge about the museum content. I would certainly recommend visiting it to everybody, even those who are not fans from the motorcycle world.

Lazaro and Santa Maria Waterfall

Vargem Grande Ecological Reserve Lázaro and Santa Maria Waterfalls East exit - Pireneus road km 11 (8km on dirty road) Trail: 500 meters as far as Santa Maria Waterfall (slight level) Trail: 1500 meters as far as Lazaro Waterfall (moderate level) Improvements: parking lot, cafeteria and restroom. Open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Reviewed By Anthony O - Sunnyvale, California, United States

Both of these Waterfalls are amazing. I decided to propose to my girlfriend here at the Lazaro waterfall and I could not be happier with the location.
The Santa Maria waterfall is located about 300m from the parking spot. The Lazaro waterfall is another 1.2km more away from the Santa Maria waterfall with a lot of steps. In the heat this hike was a true trek, but it was so worth it to hear the sound of the waterfall as we came over the hill. The Lazaro waterfall has many places that are somewhat secluded and perfect for a picnic (or proposing). The price per person was 25 Reals (around $10USD at the time).
I recommend going early. We went at around 10-11am and had only 2 other people there at the waterfall after we had been there for 15 minutes.
To get to these Waterfalls, you will need to take a bumpy dirt road for around 6 km that is not for the faint of heart. If you are taking a tiny rental like I did, prepare to keep your momentum and find the right lines to turn that puny car into an offroading beast!

Pireneus state park

Reviewed By Nancy M

9 members of my family hired a tour company to take us to this park. The road is unpaved and hard to transverse. We stopped at the "fan" overlook to see the city from above. Then we visited a medium sized rock formation with bats, and semiprecious stone rocks and a closeup of the native plants. The we visited a small chapel before ascending a steep trail to visit the 2nd highest peak in the state. Our last stop was a private waterfall. We got to swim if we wanted to before we took a different steep trail to meet up with our van. Visiting these places while interesting requires a high amount of endurance and stamina. Do not bother to visit if you cannot climb steep paths or do some simple rock climbing. Finally. We had a very well educated guide who explained the native plants and there medicinal uses. It is well worth the money to hire a guide to explain what you are seeing and help guide you on the trails.
