One of the finest preserved surviving examples of the religious architectural fervour, the abbey was constructes in the 13th century overlooking Paimpol bay. The French Revolution saw the dissolution of the abbey and it becam in turn a town hall, residential accomodation, shool and cider press. Today, the grounds surrounding the abbey extend over 297 acres and shelter a variety of fragile and threatened ecosystems.
We visited on a sunny Sunday when some of the French were busy electing a new President. The main house now is the reception area which has a small souvenir shop. Information is available in several languages and the restoration , though only of a small part, gives a good idea of life when the Abbaye was flourishing. The Gardens and orchard are simply but attractively laid out

Don't just take the straight shuttle, but take the 45mn to be boated around the Islands for a great view that you won't get hiking or biking once you are on the Islands.
Comfortable good-sized boat that was good for the whole family whether on the outside roof with the windy open air or in the downstairs covered cozy seats.

Neither of us identify as flower-enthusiasts but we had a fantastic time at these Gardens. Beautiful flowers and trees and landscaping (most are marked so laymen like us can put a name to their beauty). Some of the flowers were unlike any I had ever seen. The woman taking tickets spoke very good English and was very welcoming to us. It's impossible to walk through and not imagine the work of Van Gogh and the feeling that you're seeing what he saw in some of his works.

Once you come to the end of the road and park up, you then have to go on foot wherever you feel like going. It is covered in thorn bushes (full of sloes in the autumn) gorse and similar. It smells delicious and walking to the edge of the peninsular at any point reveals wonderful views. Well worth a visit. The only particular item worth mention is the remnant of old German pill-boxes. They built them to last... and they do just that, they are indesctructable.

Definitely worth a visit if you want to learn something of the history of Paimpol and its people. The exhibits are a fascinating glimpse into the extremely hard lives of the fisherfolk of the town who worked the faraway seas for Icelandic cod. They made long and arduous journeys in extremely harsh and freezing conditions. Many were lost at sea, never to return to their home town. It was equally hard for the women folk who were left behind for months at a time, often with many children and not knowing if their menfolk would ever come back.
The exhibits are well presented and there were English translations available for some of them. However, the pictures spoke for themselves and we easily spent over one hour there. It is humbling to realise what an easy life most of us have these days compared with these town folk of past centuries.
The entry ticket also includes a visit to the Costume Museum but we didn't have time to go there.

First of all it is essential to rebook. Secondly on the day of our booking the steam train was not running. Thirdly we were squashed together on wooden seats, and unless one has a window seat, one can't see much. Fourthly there was a mid way SMTP in the woods where one made one way down or was it up (!) to a building where we were offered cider and listened to some children perform before we concluded the trip to Pontriieux. We were dropped at the Port with little time to walk up to the shops, really just time to get something to eat at one of the eateries on the Port. So lastly, fifth lay we felt it was aver priced and over rated and one could do the same trip in considerably more comfort and for considerably less money and see the same view and pick the times to travel to suit yourselves. I suppose we thought it a bit of a rip off because we didn't even travel on a steam train!

A bit of a walk round from the port, but accessible by car from over the hill, the beach has a sea water swimming pool - filled by the tide. At high tide you see only the starting blocks, and as the tide goes out the walls appear, leaving you with a calm and sheltered swimming pool.
