This little monastery is situated 6km outside the city of Melnik, in the small city of Rozhen (which means Born). The only way to get there is by car through some really narrow roads, but it's worth it. In this small monastery, there are frescos from the 16th and 18th century, which were reserved after the several attemps to burn it. It's really interesting to see the fresco that is outside the church of the monastery which depicts the scenes for the judgement day, and it is said that it is the only one in Europe that depicts it in this way.

I've been to many wine tastings and it's easy to tell when the exhibitor is only working and when there's passion involved, which is this case. I highly recommend (if you like complex and strong wines) to taste their beautiful Chardonnay aged in oak barrels...MoreThank you for your inspiring post. Your feedback helps us continue and improve. Melnik was a little bit hard to navigate for us since all of the signs are in cyrillic letters. Luckily there were several friendly locals who told us that the view from Kordopulov house is very nice. We went to the trail on the left side of the building instead of visiting the house first to get a bird-eye view of the village.

These are easily seen from the roadside on your journey from Melnik to the Rhozen Monastery. A large number of sandstone hills cut away by the wind and rain over several centuries. We did not take in a walk due to the excessive heat on the day we visited but certainly saw what we needed to see.

This restaurant is in cave. It's cellar, they pretend that wine is own produced, but I'm afraid that it's not like this....but Bulgarian typical brandy - rakia is the quite nice!
They have some cheese and dry meet with wine.
The atmosphere is very authentic and timeless. Visit it, without bug expectations for the quality of wine but it's OK!
