Luoyang, formerly romanized as Loyang, is a city located in the confluence area of Luo River and Yellow River in Central China. It is a prefecture-level city in western Henan province. It borders the provincial capital of Zhengzhou to the east, Pingdingshan to the southeast, Nanyang to the south, Sanmenxia to the west, Jiyuan to the north, and Jiaozuo to the northeast. As of the final 2010 census, Luoyang had a population of 6,549,941 inhabitants with 1,857,003 people living in the built-up (or metro) area made of the city's five urban districts, all of which except the Jili District are not urbanized yet.

Early Chinese Buddhist cave art is represented by well-preserved pagodas, carvings and statues.
Great samples of old Buddhist art in excellent condition. Park is well organized (access ticket required) and also has a nice tourist area with a bunch of shops just by the parking area. Do not recommend visiting during Chinese New Year due to large crowds and long lines.

This was my second time going to the Longmen Grottos. They are absolutely amazing. You need to be fit to experience all the grottos, there is a lot of walking up steep rock. The stairs are well organised but its arduous. You would struggle to enjoy this site in a wheel chair. Take water in the summer as this site is very hot. There are few places a long the way to purchase water.

Most come to Luoyang for the Longmen Caves and they are a must see, but the White Horse Temple tops that experience for me. Apart from anything, it's a bargain at just RMB35 to enter. It is quite a long way East of Luoyang, but the 56 and 58 buses go all the way there from the centre for just RMB1.5. Plus you can get here by bus directly from Longmen and vice versa. The temple itself is tranquil and truly beautiful, with a lot to see in various pagodas and pavilions. However, there are extensive grounds offering many sights. To the west of the temple is a fairly new area of "international" temples, where they've recreated a Thai, Burmese and Indian buddhist complex. These cover a very wide area and there's a lot to see. To the East of the temple is a quieter park area, with several temples, pagodas and pavilions to explore, all of which seem to attract more locals and tourists seem to miss. Separating all the various areas are beautiful, tranquil Gardens and ponds. It's a really lovely area with a lot to see for an incredibly low entrance fee.

As a tourist make sure to bring your passport along upon showing your passport in the ticket office you will receive a free entrance ticket, no passport you cant go in. Several displays of different Chinese Dynasties in here with some spectacular Chinese art and pottery in display. A good half day here is more than enough specially if you are on a tight schedule while traveling thru China.

We were by chance in Luoyang in the period of the festival. It was only a park with a lot of flower, however I'm a fan of botanic Gardens in general... Peony is the most important flower in China (you find this pattern on dresses, tableware etc.),so it is understandable why Chinese people love this park, but for me it was nothing special.

There is nothing significant about this bridge historically. This bridge connects the scenic area western and eastern sides. After covering the western side, I would recommend to cross the bridge to the eastern side instead of a u-turn. At the eastern side, you will have a great panoramic view of the entire western side grottoes. Great opportunities for selfies and landscape photography.

The gate stands guard as entry to the 'old town' of Luoyang, although there isn't really anything much old about it at all. The towering gate is a massive structure, almost like a fortress, but isn't an original feature of Luoyang, having been added historically relatively recently. Well seeing nonetheless. Not sure if you can access the gate or the pavilion on top.

This is by far the most spectacular Cave of the Longmen Grottoes and the largest one. Make sure to spend a good time admiring the magnificence of this cave carvings and monumental statues.

This amazing museum is located just outside of northern Luoyang.
This amazing museum has little English or signs, I nearly missed the large tomb mounds! This site is one of my highlights from my trip to China. The museum has three parts:
1. Underground tomb museum with ancient tombs moved to this location.
2. Fresco tomb museum of paintings and art from tombs (no photos).
3. Large tomb mounds you can enter (off to the side off the museum).
It's worth taking a taxi to the White Horse Temple after visiting this site.
