The Castle of Lorca is the hallmark of the city, symbol of power and the incessant struggle between the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and the Crown of Castile. The castle-fortress is a place where history is lived first hand through Exhibitions, workshops for the whole family, guided tours and extraordinary activities throughout the year. In this space, Ben Sakar (the Hawk's Son), the virtual mascot of the castle will show you scenarios as emblematic as the walls, the stables, the cisterns, the Tower of the Spur, the Tower Alfonsina or the Jewish Synagogue.
As an avid hater of audio tours, I was pleasantly surprised with my visit to the Castle. This is definitely worth a trip to if you have a spare day! The audio guide isn't too much, and alongside older history, there is also more modern fact about the castle, mainly to do with recent earthquakes and the effects on the city/castle. The views from the castle are amazing and there's so much to take in. We went on a very hot day and regretted not taking sun hates and water as its quite open and exposed, however there are vending machines around the complex. The café was nothing too special, but was a welcome reward after a few hours in the sun and on our feet! Overall this place is definitely worth the visit if you've got a interest in Spanish history (which is cooler than I though) and have a love for the views of Spain!!

Head out of Cabo Cope with the Med on your right. After 4 Kms stop at the bar for a beer and tapas. Continue keep right at any junctions and the road climbs up an up to give magnificent view over to Cabo Cope and beyond.
Some people cycle but me - I motorcycle!

In medieval Lorca the castle, and under the protection of the Alfonsina Tower, housed the Jewish quarter of the city. The excavations of this neighborhood have made it possible to know the Jewish houses of the time, with a rectangular floor plan, compartmentalized in rooms, and which can be used for living rooms, kitchens, warehouses and other rooms with different uses. Benches attached to the wall, tinajeros, cupboards, raised alcoves, etc. In lorquina Jewry the Hebrews established their Synagogue, an exceptional example of Jewish religious art in Spain. The temple was built underground because according to the laws of the time it could not exceed the height of the churches and this, together with the fact that it was never converted into a Christian temple, has allowed the Synagogue to remain in an exceptional state. The Archaeological Park of Lorca Castle has been conceived as a space to enjoy the finds excavated in the Jewish quarter through a walk through the streets of the archaeological remains of the Jewish quarter, discover how were their houses, their trades and traditions, And the feeling of Jewish spirituality with the visit to its exceptional Synagogue.
Lorca suffered a really bad earthquake (2) in May 2011. Several churches and monuments were destroyed. Work is underway to restore them. We did not know of the earthquake before we arrived. We were interested in Lorca as we wanted something out of the ordinary. It certainly delivers - in a positive way.

Having visited many many main squares in Spain we expected more from a town as prominent as Lorca. Whilst the buildings are as always typical of this type of square it lacks the grandeur of other large towns.

The exterior, as is the case with most of the churches and cathedrals we visited in Spain, is very ornate on the outside and the inside, although architecturally stunning, is fairly plain inside. It's set in a beautiful little square with an excellent tourist office, with the castle as a backdrop on the hill behind.

Quiet Sunday afternoon visit, with so few people we were able to wander around at our leisure taking in the amazing archeological museum.
The discoveries in the glass cabinets give a real insight into Lorca's history and brought to life how people lived and survived hundreds of years ago.
Well worth a visit.

We spoke to a lady whose English was excellent. She gave us a great map of the city and marked attractions open on the day we visited as well as advising on several choices for lunch.
