Marques de Murrieta

Marques de Murrieta is an older than 160 years-old winery where the deep respect for the history and the tradition finds a perfect balance with the focus on the future. Its origin dates from 1852 when Luciano Murrieta y Garcia -Lemoine produces the first fine wine from Rioja and is the first one to export it. He acquires the Ygay Estate and builds his emblematic Ygay Castle. In 1983 Vicente Cebrian Sagarriga, tenth Count of Creixell, takes over the project and after his death in 1996, his children, who are currently responsible of such an ambitious and endearing family business that they strengthen day after day with its presence in the different continents. The uniqueness and quality of the Marques de Murrieta wines is determined, to a great extent, by the singular caracter of the Ygay Estate, 300 hectares of own vineyards located around the winery, which allow the absolute control of the raw material. Located in the south of Rioja Alta, it enjoys a privileged continental climate tempered in the north by the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains. The grape varieties cultivated are five reds (tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano and cabernet sauvignon) and the white viura.

The 100 year-old Bodega de Marques de Murrieta has been completely modernised during the past few years. The estate is very impressive and the visit very entertaining.
The wine tasting is fun and professional.
The wines of Marques de Murrieta are lenderay when you come to their top bottles : Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva, red and White ! They can age for decades : the estate has just launched their 1986 white and the 1934 red is still drinkable.

Scheduling the tour in Campo Viejo was easily the highlight of the visit to the region and beyond. My husband was impressed by the winery, its engineering solutions and detailed information about the wine-making process. The winery tour was hosted by lovely, resourceful and pleasant Judith. I was impressed by the surrounding vineyards, warmth, friendliness of the staff and off course- the wine. We purchased 7 bottles at the end- and if we didn't have to travel to the United States afterwards- we would have probably left with more. The ambiance set up for tasting was very nicely and generously executed. We left with the impression that we were greatly accommodated. I would also like to note that we toured vineyards in Napa Valley and Bordeoux but so far Campo Viejo was our favorite experience.

I think we broke the record for tapas stops in Calle Laurel and its adjacent streets . Obviously no need for Dinner just hit the ground running and jump from One Tapas Bar to the other . Which one is better is hard to say look at the outside menus and we always stop at the busy one with the most locals. A little Spanish never hurts .

This is one of the oldest churches in Logroño and its currently being restored, so If you have time its well recommended to visit it. Don't be fooled by its small size (compared with others in Logroño) the artistic and historical value of it is way bigger than it size. the main altar, the portal and carve doors are beautiful and the choir is worth to photograph.

With its tall, twin spires visible from all over town, this magnificent building is the architectural gem of Logrono. I'm not sure about current access arrangements however, as for the two days we were in town, the doors were firmly closed. There was a Fiesta in town at the same time, so I don't know if this had a bearing.

Logrono is a wonderful town and Parque del Espolon provides a beautiful centrepiece and focal point. A great place to wander at any time of the day, but in the late evening it is extra special, particularly if there is a concert on the stage.
