Wisata Bahari Lamongan

Reviewed By Edmund K - Singapore, Singapore

A local place with food, amusement rides, retail outlets and music near the coast. This place is active during the weekend amongst the villagers but dead during weekdays. I happened to be in Lamongan for a water project and visited this and the zoo. It would be foolish to specifically visit. The road from Surabaya is always traffic-jammed. Lamongan is not far from Surabaya; it could take you up to 2 hours to get here. I am glad the locals have such an outlet for recreation; BUT it is not touristic. I rated this poor as an international traveller.

Sunan Drajad Graveyard

Reviewed By Raymond W - Chengdu, China

According to legend, Islam was introduced to Java by nine holy men, who came from everywhere from Iraq to India. Most of these men belonged to the mystical Sufi version of Islam, which was known for its willingness to accommodate local traditions and cultures. You can certainly see this kind of cross-cultural fertilization in evidence at Sunan Drajad graveyard, along Java's strongly Islamic North Coast.
Pilgrims to the grave of Sunan Drajad recite Koranic verses but they also wear local batik and lace work and many of the pilgrims sit in the lotus position, like meditating Buddhist monks. Asian and Islamic religious practises still mix here, though Indonesia is gradually becoming more orthodox in its interpretation of Islam. The grave of Sunan Drajad himself is surrounded by an intricately carven teak screen and you can hear pilgrims chanting prayers at all times of the day. Far from the tourist trail, this place offers an opportunity to experience modern Javanese religious practise up close.

Its about 2 hours from surabaya, but this is one of the must place to visit in East Jawa.

Sunan Giri Mosque and Tomb

Reviewed By Raymond W - Chengdu, China

Java was one of the last parts of the Islamic world to convert to the religion. This process began in earnest in the 15th century when a few North Coast sultanates converted to the new religion, cutting off the coastal trading ports of the mountainous Hindu-Buddhist interior. Today, the overwhelming majority of Javanese are Muslim, though a few small pockets of Hindus survive, especially in the far East.
The religion was spread, according to legend, by nine holy men known collectively as 'Wali Songo'. One of these was Sunan Giri and his religious complex was situated on a forested hill outside the port of Gresik, about 40 kms from Surabaya. The mosque here is 500 years old and follows classic Javanese lines. But Sunan Giri's tomb is the real highlight. This beautiful teak tomb features wonderful, finely detailed woodwork which surpasses even the tomb of Sunan Drajad for beauty. The blissful chanting of devotees seated around the tomb was mesmerizing to listen to; I can rarely recall seeing so pure a sense of devotion. This place is one of the finest sites of Indonesian Islam; the sea views out to the Madura Strait only add to the experience.

Quite an interesting attraction and better than I had imagined .
Interesting history about how this brand was established in Indonesia .
The viewing platform upstairs was fascinating . Unfiltered cigarettes are hand rolled by an army of workers who each have to produce 360 hand rolled cigarettes each hour !!! No automation here . That’s one cigarette every 10 seconds .
Great to see such a large Enterprise employing so many people . Part of the display are 2 magnificent Rolls Royce cars .
Worth the visit
