Kalpitiya Diving Center (KDC) is an identical base location for safe diving and exploring typical Sri Lankan coral reef and reef fishes. Recreational divers can learn scuba diving and make guided dive trips to most scenic reef destinations in Kalpitiya. We organize short term PADI-DSD courses associated with pool training sessions for beginners and helps them to have guided comfortable diving experience with exploring hundreds of colorful creatures living at the distinct locations of Kalpitiya bar reef and surrounding hotspots.
We enjoyed staying with Sam and Nilou very much. The bungalow next to the dive center is great for if you come with young kids. The diving with Sam was also great. I saw some nice stuff, such as turtles, Napoleon wrasses and some huge rays. A very nice place indeed!

We provide...... boat trips, diving excursions, dolphin boat tours, mangrove tours, Eco tours, snorkling trips, bar reef exploration.
Clearly far behind the global curve for cetacean watching. The way the boats ride up on dolphins at full speed, altering their behaviour and movement would be unacceptable in most other countries. Guides do not speak English, do not care about the dolphins or any other wildlife, have zero facts or interesting tidbits and in our case, cut the trip 1.5 hours short. The trip is literally just a boat ride in a dinghy for roughly 3 hours and about 10-15 minutes of dolphin harassment. Thank goodness they only go in the morning so the dolphins get a break in the afternoon and evening.
If you read this and continue anyways with the tour remember what you have read here. You will regret doing the tour - I guarantee it.

Excellent all round from the initial mail approach, the hotel visit to discuss options and the event itself. We went dolphin watching and saw literally hundreds. A little of the beaten track but well worth the trip to Kalpitiya.

"Epic Encounters", is a dive and adventure center based in Kalpitiya Sri Lanka. Epic Encounters is the only stop you need to make to experience the many wonders of the seas on the west coast of Sri Lanka. We are the only certified dive centre in Kalpitiya, and our goal is to introduce adventurous travelers to the diverse oceanic wildlife, in the seas bordering the Kalpitiya peninsula.
We went on a dolphin watching tour and saw many animals. That was an amazing experience. I booked the tour in advance and Manura, the manager responded to all my email inquiries promptly. Manura is extremely knowledgeable about dolphins and very friendly. I highly recommend this fantastic company!

Though the place is famous for kitesurfing, I led a group of friends from India to Kalpitiya for dolphin watching. We stayed in Kitesurfing Kalpitiya and went for dolphin watching and then snorkelling. The camp is beautiful... nice and simple food... And nowhere else did I enjoy such freedom.. Dil and his team are really friendly and helpful.

Spent 1 night in 2 of Ruwala's "newest" bungalows. Having traveled throughout South and SE Asia, I can confidently say this was THE most mis-priced lodging experience. I've spent $15/day and $500/day and never felt more ripped off than at Ruwala.
The staff, particularly the chef were accommodating and tried hard, but being led by a buffoon of a manager, they were ill equipped to handle even modest requests. Even local tourists, at whom this eco "resort" is targeted, would struggle to find much to applaud.
Room's we were given had dirty towels (we found more stuffed in the closet) and the faucets in the shower and sink were totally stained, as if they hadn't been properly cleaned after the recent work on the room. The room itself wasn't even complete, with the lofted viewing deck patched up with styrofoam/polystyrene. Birds and other animals pecked and clawed at the crude covering all night, showering my wife and I with little styrofoam shavings.
And if you're attracted to Kalpitya (as I was) by the variety of developing water-based activities, Ruwala is NOT the way to go. You face the large lagoon and most activities you might wish to try require a car ride to the beach/seaside (e.g. whale watching, diving, kite surfing).
Oh and did I mention the bugs on our bed and pillow?? I was told some of the small hotels open and which face the sea are nice and it seemed so when we tried Ruwala's totally under-powered 25hp boat to go dolphin watching.
If you want the convenience of beach access and clean linens and towels, look elsewhere! Ruwala is NOT for you.
