What to do and see in Holbox Island, Mexico: The Best Places and Tips

January 25, 2018 Ying Subia

Flamingos and pelicans and herons…oh my! Holbox Island is beloved by bird nerds for its population of exotic avian life. Perched near the Yucatan Peninsula, the island is also a hot spot for whale shark viewing, and kiteboarders love the shallow waters and wide beaches. The white sand streets are relatively unspoiled, as most tourists prefer to party it up in nearby Cancun. A splash in Yalahao Lagoon is about as loco as it gets.

We came here as part of 3-island tour from Holbox. It was really really crowded with tourists (as in, you're bumping into people all the time in the water or on the decks around the water).
Granted, the water was nice and cool and refreshing. However, there's a coating of slime all over the plants in the water. Perhaps that's due to the high number of visitors or pollution. I've been to several other beautiful cave cenotes near Tulum that blow this out of the water.
However, the mangroves leading to the cenote are very pretty and there's a cute friendly wild raccoon that you can hand-feed onsite. And some huge iguanas!

Barcos Holbox Express

The best way to get to Isla Holbox. You can travel on the top enjoying the sea breeze, or in the cabin in reclining seats and air conditioning. In approximately 20 minutes you will arrive comfortably safe to your destination.

Have used them both trips to Holbox, never had an issue. The trip is 30 minutes, and I recommend using the restroom before boarding - as there is no sign indicating that there is one on board..... I'm sure that there is one.....Hi Philip! Yes we have one bathroom in the boat!

Stopped here at the end of our whale shark swimming trip to round things up with a spot of freshly made ceviche and wildlife spotting! There is cat fish absolutely everywhere and the pink flamingos were delightful - I recommend a camera with a good zoom as you are prohibited from going remotely close enough to view properly (which i completely agree with)

Wonderful and very much needed organization. They are doing wonderful work and provide free spay/neuter services not only on Holbox but also on the Mainland. Cats and dogs are available for adoption and they said many of the dogs do get adopted by island visitors but rarely does anyone adopt a cat:(. They also do wildlife rehabilitation. Please stop and visit; donate and/or they also have volunteer opportunities.

Small shop. Probably one of the older shops in town. The owner is pleasant and hillarious! Fito is a super cool pup. Worth a visit. Lots of shell jewellery, maybe you'll see something you like?

Punta Coco Beach

This beach is really nice and it’s not packed with people. At night you can see the plankton glowing in the water and a lot of stars shinning. The water is not as green/blue but more like greenish swampy looking but still very beautiful. It’s great for kids since there’s no waves and the water is low.
