Giang Mo is a small village near Mai Chau Town, in Hoa Binh Province, about 140 km west of Hanoi.
It is home to "White Tai", one of Vietnam's numerous ethic minorities who settled here about 400 years ago. As we bicycled through the village many people smiled in typical Thai style and said "Sawasdeekrab", for they still speak Thai as their first language.
Imagine their surprise when I replied, "Sawasdeekrap, sabai mai, krab?" (Hello, how are you?" They were not expecting a westerner who could speak their language.
They live in traditional teak wood houses on stilts, the stilts providing coolness during the hot season and a refuge under the house for the ducks, hens, dogs and other animals that abound here.
They farm the fertile soil of the valley floor, producing up to three crops a year of rice and/or vegetables.
It is rural Vietnam at its very best.

If you are in the Mai Chau area on a Sunday, a visit to Pa Co Market is a must. It is located about 20 km from Mai Chau town.
Each Sunday regional ethnic people, such as Hmong from Moc Chau and Tai from Mai Chau, bring their handmade produce to the markets, and they often dress up in their traditional costumes, providing a colour spectacle for visitors to the market and tourists.
If you are looking for an authentic souvenir to take home, look for hand woven materials, including silk wall hangings, baskets of various shapes and sizes, including the large baskets that villages carry on their backs when foraging in the fields and Forests.
Even in the 21st century, Pa Co Market is a taste of the old rural Vietnam.
