Like Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuehl is one of the smaller medieval fortress cities. With its walls and towers still intact, it has the look of a typical German town of the 15th to early 17th century. Sample the famous German cuisine served in larger cities, but without the crowds. Don't miss the annual summer celebration, marking the city's surrender to Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. The event is emphatically reenacted by many of the town's residents. And really, who doesn't love amateur theater?

This walled village houses mercantile buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The fortified wall has sixteen towers; you can access the city from four of them.
Drove the Romantic Road in August. This was one of our favourite villages of the trip. Straight out of a Grimm's Fairy Tale. Cobblestone streets, friendly folks and a very peaceful atmosphere. The houses and businesses are rendered in late Renaissance facades with pastel colours and half-timbered frames. So photographic and charming.
We parked on the outer ring and walked into the town through one of the four medieval gates that remain . This town has a history! Probably starting around the 8th century. It was once a "Free Imperial City" of the Holy Roman Empire. In the 13th century the fortifications began. Luckily this town is original, untouched by WWI or WWII bombings. Forward thinking in the 19th century, by Ludwig I proclaimed the city to be a heritage site to be preserved and protected.
Delightful shops, bakeries, cafes, inns, restaurants and churches. Well worth an afternoon of roaming around. Highly recommend saving time to walk the fortification walls or at the least climb the St. George church tower. Delightful!

This 15th-century Gothic church is one of the highlights of this small town.
History abounds in this 15th Century Church. Gothic in nature with the traditional pointed arches. Famed as one of Germany's largest "Hall Churches". It has highly decorated altars and tall pillars supporting the single roof-line. Massive in nature but delicate and full of light. Hunt out the relics...interesting.
Recommend taking the time to enjoy the church building and also the added tower. Fun to climb and enjoy the Germany countryside vistas.

This wonderful museum is located at the Tourist Info Centre at the Altrathaus Platz not far from the Wornitz gate. It is set in a series of small rooms over multiple levels of the Altes Rathaus. Audio guides are available and advisable.
We had a great time here and there is the odd surprise to be found! The history of this lovely town is covered from the earliest times to the arrival of the impressionist painters and more. The displays are varied and interesting and very well presented.
We had a fun day in Dinkelsbuhl and were not sure if we wanted to visit this museum, but we were very pleased that we did. A top museum that is well worth visiting.

Compondo com a muralha e os outros 3 portões o conjunto arquitetônico mais importante e emblemático da cidade, o Wornitztor é o mais antigo e se situa no acesso principal à mesma. A visitação das muralhas e dos seus portões é visita obrigatória.

Unfortunately you cant go into the towers but you can get a great view as you approach them as you walk round the town walls. It feels like you are looking at something from a fairy tale from long ago except with the noise of modern traffic. Go on a clear sunny day to really appreciate their beauty.

Although there was building work going on around the tower on the inner wall, we were able to appreciate it from the outside and used this landmark as a starting point for our tour of the towns walls as it was so distinctive and close to our car park. Watch out for the cars as you cross under the tower and it is better viewed from a slight distance to get the full height of the tower in view.

This is in reality the first inkling one gets of the old walled city of Dinkelsbuehl. I entered the town through the manway portal, and the wonderful view is in front of one immediately. Cobblestone streets and Fachhaueser (half timbered houses). Wonderful glimpse of what medieval Germany must have been 500 years earlier.
