If you are visiting the historical town of Diamantina, you cannot avoid a visit to the State Park of Biribiri, a few kilometers outside Diamantina. The vegetation there is the typical vegetation of the Brazilian plateau: "cerrado", not a forest but a lower vegetation plenty of bushes and beautiful flowers. Even in the dry season. But the main atraction of this Park are its falls: we visited two, Sentinela & Cristais, and had a good splash! Diamantina during the day can be quite hot, so we enjoyed this visit to the falls.
But Biriri is not only the Park, there is also a small village that was built end of XIX century, around a textile industry, that went bankrupt. Now some houses are being sold to transform this village into a touristic/cultural center of the region's traditions. This place is a delight: absolutely peaceful and it has one good familiar restaurant, called "Raimundo sem Braço", serving typical food of Minas Gerais.

Very nice house to visit. You can see how the house looked like before renovations and after. Nice welcome and this is free. We recommend this place!

When you check in at the gate to the State Park that you must drive through to get to Biribiri you will be cautioned against the vandalismo and vagabondos that could trouble you on the 12 km dirt road leading to the abandoned textile mill town. Don't be discouraged but go ahead. The countryside is beautiful and the cachoeiras (waterfalls) refreshing. On descending the last hill into town you will notice the mill complex on your right. This is off limits now, but will give you an idea of the extent of the manufacturing that took place here between 1876 and 1972, at which time the 600 residents had to find employment elsewhere. In its heyday, Biribiri had its own electrical generation, store, school, barbershop, church, club and restaurant. Today all is quiet as you wander around town. You can have lunch and a beer before heading back to Diamantina. This is a highly recommended side trip.

This is a great little museum. I found out much about the life of JK and it was well done. Lots of interesting artifacts and photos make this place well worth a visit if you are in Diamantina.

This is an almost entirely encircled rock grotto with the vertical walls high compared to the floor size, making for an intriguing "hidden" space. There is a narrow path in, interesting vertical slabs of rock, some big overhangs near the floor, and a small bit of rock scrambling. This is a short visit, but worth it for being just outside of Diamantina.
Note the waterfall picture here is not Gruta.

One of the two churches in the centat square area, there is a museum which charges 5 rs to enter and contains the usual religious items. Definately worth seeing since it is right there downtown.

Every Saturday the Mercado dos Tropeiros opens its doors to traditional crafts and delicacies. There's always live music and the unavoidable 'stupidly cold' beer. Lately, local Breweries are also offering their exquisite blends. Not many places to sit, though. The building itself is a delight. Used originally by the troopers from the early 20th Century, it has been turned into a cultural area after those fearless merchants were replaced by the train.

The Museu do Diamante, the city's diamond museum, displays equipment used in colonial-period mines. It's in the former house of Padre Rolim, one of the Inconfidentes (supposedly Chica had once belonged to Rolim as well). Other items on exhibit include instruments made to torture slaves and sacred art from the 16th to the 19th centuries. There are guided tours of the rooms where diamonds were classified and separated.

This is just one of the many beautiful wooden churches in Diamantina, it is painted in lovely colours and has a very simple interior for which there is a small charge to go into.
