The sea wall defence of Socoa is nice place with a little hidden beach. Here when there are not storm you can walk on it and have a unique view on Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the bay. Either you can watch the waves hurt the sea wall defence. You can only go walking on it.
These flood defences were created in the 19th century - hard to imagine how given the power of the sea, even on a calm day. Each year, 50 new 50 tonne blocks are added to the barrier to keep the sea at bay. Worth walking to the end and admiring the view.
Such a shame that the fort itself is closed off rather than being open or used.

The great French classical composer Maurice Ravel was born in the Basque town of Ciboure in 1875. St Jean de Luz harbour was famous as a whale fishing port and it is now a renowned sardine fishing port and a really lovely place to visit. With brightly coloured boats, fishermen mending their nets, a backdrop of beautiful Basque architecture and a whiff of salty sea air this is surely a haven of the senses. The lovely Quai Maurice Ravel is probably best viewed from the harbour of St Jean de Luz - a dream come true for painters and photographers

We had a great time in the cave, tasting some wines that are matured with a original technique, in the sea water for some month. Very passionate wine maker! Worth the visit!

Great lesson with Jerome - lots of little activities to teach us important moves, great views of the bay and then ended with paddling boarding surf lesson on the small waves! So much fun. Went longer than the lesson was meant to be so that was super nice as well

This fort, built in 1627 and rebuilt by Vauban, was designed to protect the port of Socoa and the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. He fulfilled his role until the mid-19th century before being assigned to Customs and then to sailing.
Fort de Socoa was created and built between 1627 and 1686 from the direct order of
King Louis XIII, by the famous French military architect and engineer Vauban.
The fort served as a military stronghold during all wars including WWII. The Fort de Socoa has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1925. Worth seeing when you are in the Basque Country.

Nice little beach protected in the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz-Ciboure. This beach is perfect for families. Little of current and waves. Beach watched between the middle of June and the middle of September. Restaurants, snack bars and nautical activities (snorkelling, paddle-board, kayak, water-skiing) nearby.
Great beach, very clean. Lovely views out to sea . .Great shops and restaurants near by. Good for families. Safe bathing.
