One of the largest city parks in Europe, created by the local politician Jerzy Ziętek between the cities of Chorzów, Katowice and Siemianowice Śląskie. Many attractions, such as zoo, amusement park, stadiums, Planetarium and regular large events organised there as well. However, I refuse to call it by its modern name invented by the regional government several years ago. For me it will always remain Wojewódzki Park Kultury i Wypoczynku (WPKiW) - Voivodeship Park of Culture and Recreation.

I have ambivalence perception of this place. On one hand I like the idea on the other hand I don't like the current execution. I remember when I was small the cable railway had three stations and covered the whole park. Recently it's been modernised and only two stations are left - so instead going in a triangular shape you go only one direction. However, the benefit of the modernisation is the availability of closed cabins - which is much safer for small children. Money-wise it's way overpriced and takes app 20-25 minutes for a one direction ride.

The biggest and the oldest Planetarium in Poland was founded in 1955 to commemorate a great astronomer - Nicolaus Copernicus. It is provided with Zeiss projection apparatus, placed under the 23 metres dome - the screen of the artificial sky. Almost 400 spectators can watch the programme at the same time. The Planetarium sky is an exact picture of the real firmament under which different lectures take place. Most of them deal with geography, astronomy but musical shows can be attended there as well. The telescope with 30 cm objective situated in the Astronomical Observatory enables astronomers who work in the Planetarium to follow planetoids and comets. On fine days, visitors can observe the Sun, and after the sunset - admire the most interesting night objects, even with magnification of 750 times. Time is measured by the big sun-dial which is situated in the Planetarium yard.
The Planetarium is in the middle of a large park and Goggle maps and our Satnav couldn't find it exactly. However once in the park it was signposted. We visited on a weekday morning and there were several school and college groups there at the same time. The lady taking the money was unable to explain anything to us and so another member of staff who could speak English was summonsed to deal with these strange British visitors (We may have been the first ever). We were taken through our own personal entrance to the Planetarium where we were provided with seats and watched the show as the Solar system was explained in great deal using projections onto the inside of the huge domed ceiling. The show was being put on for a couple of hundred college students. The elliptical orbits of the planets, comets etc was explained as was the mechanics of Lunar and Solar eclipses. Show over and we were picked up again by our personal guide who then gave us an explained glimpse at the Observatory whilst the hordes of students were held back! The Planetarium is set in a beautiful park and after the visit we took advantage of the bright Autumn weather to take a walk through.

We was genuinely surprised when we visited Silesia Zoo. Having previously visited Krakow Zoo and not being impressed, we did not expect this zoo at a less popular location to be great but has some spare time so though we would visit.
The zoo is well maintained and has a great selection of animals. Including the biggest hippo i have ever seen at a zoo. Some of the zoo was being improved and as a result i think some of the animals where not present, but given how cheap entrance to the park was we couldn't moan.
The "dinosaur valley" was very old and a little worn out. It was also at the bottom of a steep hill and the path to reach it was a little tough to navigate. If you are not too fussed i would say don't bother with this part of the park.
The zoo is located in a lovely park and i would highly recommend a visit to anybody in the area.

The project of the Freestyle Park is aimed at every person who is interested in Freestyle sports such as snowboarding, skiing, roller-skating, riding bikes, kitesurfing, etc. It is also meant to be a great place for children or adults who would like to improve their physical fitness while having a great fun.
A tu niestety brak takiej możliwości...

In late seventies and in eighties of 20th century all kids in southern Poland dreamt about visiting this Park. That was the best that could happen to any school kid, and it was always a dream destination of every school trip. But situation dramaticaly changed in the nineties, as the Park slowly started falling into disrepair, and rewievs heard here and there were alarming. But for last couple of years situation seemed to improve slightly, with large investents being made to Park's rides one by one, so we decided to try our luck, and around Childrens Day we finally made our trip. And it was a good decision, good day out, although they still got a lot to do in the Park. First of all - the Park has been rearranged, so the only true map is the one on their website - no google earth or other sites give a real look into things. Ticket office at the entry - then all the rides available, some massive queues to some of them. Widely advertised Fastpass ticket (allowing skiping the queue) wasn't available, and a lady in the ticket office said it doesn't really exist, and in fact there was no facilities at any rides for Fastpass. There's many new rides, although there's still few old ones, refurbished, but with some peeling paint. Some attractions advertised as a new for 2017 haven't been ready yet (3 June), and the biggest rollercoaster looked like still plenty of work to do before opening. Some arrangements with queues definitelly need to be changed, as some rides are not fenced, and people jump into them as soon as they stop, not giving a chance of dissembark for people wishing to get off. The ferris wheel (Legendia Flower) looks like a great adventure, with - probably - great views from the top, but queuing system, strange noises/fume/rediculous breaking system put us off - don't think it's safe. Best attraction ever - Diamond River, with not one but two slides in a boat into the water - obviously getting you completely wet. Probably this is not as good on a cold day, but we enjoyed a superb weather. Definitelly a place worth visiting, hopefully they will keep on investing in this place, so it regains it's all former fame.

One of the most disasters of modern Śląsk. Renovation began in 2009, with no specified end date. It was a great place to organize events, but the officials ruined it. Maybe someday...
