Scavi di Stabia

Reviewed By Sally F - Northampton, United Kingdom

Staying in Castellammare di Stabia, we had read about these excavations but not much is made about them in the guidebooks. We decided to get a taxi from our hotel and were glad that we did as it would have been a long, hot walk up the hill. Villa San Marco is the larger and better preserved of the two. There is a large car park although, at the time we visited, we were the only ones on the site. The entrance is between some houses and there is someone there but no payment to go in - you just sign a visitor book. Quite mind-blowing! Equally as good as many of the buildings at Pompeii and you can walk on the mosaic floors, go right up to the frescoes and even see the lava filling one of the rooms which hasn't yet been excavated. Some of the frescoes are now in the archeological museum in Naples but there are lots still in situ. We then walked to the Villa di Arianna - it took about 15 minutes and there is no path for quite a lot of it so you have to walk along the road. This villa is smaller and less well preserved but still interesting. Again free to enter. Both sites have clean toilets but there are no refreshments so worth taking a bottle of water with you. Friendly staff who speak a little English. Can't recommend these villas highly enough - absolutely amazing!

Scavi di Pompei

Home of the world's most famous volcanic disaster when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., Pompeii is now a significant archeological site that provides an amazing glimpse into the daily life of an average Roman town over two thousand years ago.

The site as a whole is fantastic considering its history however it was incredibly tourist unfriendly. Access is terribly poor if you go with a buggy or wheelchair and make sure that you book a guide as there is no information whatsoever on what you are looking at. We managed to cover quite a lot of ground with the buggy however but we were knackered by the end of the day.

Mon Blanc Retro Caffe

Went there a few times. Have tried various coffees. My personal favorite were the pistacchio and kinder flavors! They are just ecstatic! It's a heaven for all those who have a sweet tooth. Staff is always friendly and welcoming there. Good customer service is not smth that can be found often in Italy however all the personnel there is wonderful. On the other hand I expected lots more from the cocktails. We have tried a few the night before Christmas and they were just ok. Neither something outstanding nor a great presentation. Not sure whether they were just too busy to put more effort in it or it's just not their speciality. It was really overcrowded that night. In any case would definitely recommend this place for coffees.

Monte Faito e Panorama

Reviewed By JuliusVtravel - Naples, Campania, Italy

Monte Faito, at 1100 metres (3600feet) and almost the same height as Vesuvius at 1281 metres (4200 feet), will be the highlight to your visit to Castellammare di Stabia, located between Sorrento/Vico Equense and Pompeii. The summit provides spectacular 360° panoramic views of both the Gulf of Naples as well as the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast with the Island of Capri in the distance. The ascent will take 8 minutes in the cable car that holds 35 people. The first departure is at 9.35 am and the last return is at 16.25. Do check the details as the service does not operate during the late autumn, winter and early spring periods. You can take a car to the top via Vico Equense. The charge is €8 and in my opinion the best investment you can make during your stay on the Sorrento Peninsula.

Oplonti Villa di Poppea Ruins

This villa is for the biggest part excavated but some parts still lie under the modern town. The most remarkable is the window shutters, which were made wood in those days, were charred and the hollows filled with plaster, (like the victims in Pompei) and give a good impression how they looked like. All in all, a big villa with beautiful fresco's.

Scavi di Oplontis

Reviewed By els d - Oevel, Belgium

This is the excavation of the villa of Poppeia, the second wife of emperor Nero. It is really worthwhile to pay a visit. The whole villa is excavated and you see all the rooms, many of them with beautiful fresco's. At the ticket office you recieve a small written guide that explains every room you visit. It's a gem, even if you've seen already other nice excavations. You can find it in the city centre, close to the highway exit. But don't bother finding a parking space, because you won't find one. Leave your car, if you can, as soon as you leave the highway and take a walk following the signs. It's only a few hundred meters away.

There is evidence of this place being revamped, but I'm not sure how fast they are progressing (if at all at the moment). It has the makings of an attractive coastal area, but at the moment looks very tired and 'low rent'.

Forum

Reviewed By Titus D - Sri Lanka

This cannot be missed when visiting the Pompeii. It gives a good idea about the greatness of the ancient city. The forum in Rome seems crowded with buildings but here there seems to be a great central public gathering space with important public buildings surrounding it.
If you already visited Herculaneum you should expect to be impressed. You need at least two hours. This is the real Centre of old Pompeii - big square with everything you expect from Antique Roman life. As the center of social and governmental function, the forums in ancient Roman cities functioned as parade grounds, execution site, elections and more. Flanked by the remains of temples and other buildings, the Forum in Pompeii is a great example of this. Vesuvius stands ominously.
When you reach the forum, you cannot help it to be impressed by its size: It is a grand forum indeed with many of the original features still standing. The site was way beyond what we had expected. Much of the ruins is still in good shape. You have a clear view of Mt. Vesuvius. Take a guide.
The history and the architecture were amazing. The place was packed the day we went but it is so big it's not really a problem. Nobody visiting the site should miss it. It's one of the main draws of the ruins.
We timed it perfectly at dusk and got lighting that was unique and fewer people. From the time you set foot in Pompeii you feel in awe of just how much history has taken place here. The cobblestones are so warn down from thousands of years use. This is a must see in Italy! It's one of the dozen spots you will need to visit.C1What a great place. The forum is where everything happened and to be able to stand in the middle of it where people walked over 200 years ago is wild.
