Breisach (formerly Altbreisach) is a town with approximately 16,500 inhabitants, situated along the Rhine in the Rhine Valley, in the district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about halfway between Freiburg and Colmar — 20 kilometres away from each — and about 60 kilometres north of Basel near the Kaiserstuhl. A bridge leads over the Rhine to Neuf-Brisach, Alsace.

We didn't make it up the hill but saw it from many parts of the town - and, at night, it was glorious. Especially because of all the Christmas lights.

Vauban was Louise XIV master fortification builder, he fought as a soldier from a young age and was given the job to fortify the borders of France.
He designed/built Neufchâtel-Brisach to guard against attack from the Holy Roman Empire and subsequently Germany.
Work started in 1698 and was completed after Vauban died in 1707 aged 73.
The city was laid out in a grid pattern and was thought of as an ideal city.
It has a large central square and a very big church.
Vauban was responsible for 37 new fortresses and upgraded the fortifications of about 300 cities in his lifetime.
You can walk around the whole area in a couple of hours and see all the different lived in houses, apartments, shops, bars and restaurants, there is even a mini supermarket.
There doesn't appear to be an hotel inside the walls and no restaurants of outstanding quality which is a shame.
Go after April 1st or you won't get to see inside the museum as it is closed for Winter.

This small village winery has been famous for its quality wines since its founding in the mid-15th century.
It was a rainy afternoon, excellent occasion for some wine tasting. Weingut Bercher is located in the center of the beautiful village Burkheim. We had a warm and friendly welcome and tasted some great wines. We decided to buy 2 boxes, but it was difficult to make a choice because all wines we tasted were excellent.
Next time we are in the area, we will go there again if possible.

Visited the Black Forest April 3, 2012 as part of our Viking River Boat cruise. The scenery was just OK. Keep in mind we live near the California Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite and this didn't come close at all. The highest elevation was about 3,000 ft, so the scenery was more scrub bushes and like that. The stop at the clock shop and glass blowing was touristy, but the entire experience was kinda ho-hum. I guess that's why they call the forest BLACK....I wouldn't waste my time in Europe on a trip back there. Hope this helps you with your plans.
