Bernkastel-Kues (German pronunciation: [ˌbɛɐ̯nkastəlˈkuːs]) is a well-known winegrowing centre on the Middle Moselle in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The town is a state-recognized health resort (Erholungsort), seat of the Verbandsgemeinde of Bernkastel-Kues and birthplace of one of the most famous German polymaths, the mediaeval churchman and philosopher Nikolaus von Kues (Cusanus).

The beautiful rolling hills situated along the Mosel River make for one of Europe's great wine Valleys.
I love driving down to this part of Germany to spend some time marvelling at the views of the winding Mosel valley, enjoying the wines and sampling the local food. Sometimes we come down for the day (a long one) or, like recently, we spent the best part of three days in the area. We based ourselves in the hills above Leiwen and spent most of the time heading east along the river side to explore the many wine villages & towns such as Trittenheim, Piesport, Bernkastel-Kues, Kröv, Zell, Beilstein and Cochem. There are some great Castles to explore and, for keen walkers there are a plethora of well laid out walks on various degrees of difficulty to tackle.

Wandering through the Markplatz and the other narrow alleyways of Bernkastel-Kues is a true delight. The over-the-top Germanic architecture has an almost Disney-like feel to it - perfect half-timbered buildings with gorgeous flower baskets hanging from them. There are some interesting stores, great restaurants and places just to simply hang out. Later in the afternoon is best when the crowds die down.

As part of our river cruise we did wine tasting at this location and I have to say I have never seen anything like it. I have done wine tastings all over the world but never have I been given the option to wander around and try as many of the 140 wines as I desired. Most of the wines are predominantly white so if you are a red wine drinker, this probably isn't for you. They do have about 30 reds but the area is a white wine region and after trying a few reds, we concentrated solely on whites. The wines are in a cave with a numbered placard that gives you some information about the wine. The number corresponds to a numbered wine bottle and you can opt for whatever appeals to you. We had great fun and enjoyed such a different type of wine tasting experience.

I have been to Bernkastel many times, each time is a new experience. Kues is the town on the other side of the river.
Bernkastel is a German tourist trap.
The river Mosel is beautiful with vineyards galore rising up on each river bank.
Up river is the town of Cochem, also worth a visit.

If you're looking for a spot to get fabulous views of the Mosel Valley you would be hard pressed to do better than the Burgruine-Landshut. Situated high above Bernkastel-Kues it offers stunning views of the valley. The castle has recently been spruced up and there is a well built walkway that goes around the entire castle with convenient viewing platforms. The castle itself is only open in the afternoons (we visited in the morning).
There is a large parking lot which is accessed by taking the side road from highway 50 (which runs up from highway 53 just west of Bernkastel). However, the path from the parking lot is very steep and long which will be a huge issue if you are mobility challenged. There is a short cut! Take the road that cuts up from highway 53 just past the Hotel Zur Post (the street is called Schlossweg). It's a narrow road but it leads directly to the castle where there's about a half dozen parking spots - no steep hill to climb up and down!

We went on a tasting and really enjoyed it. Our guide did a great job, and to my delight they served a very dry, excellent Riesling. This wine is available in the states. The wine cave was interesting and the area is very beautiful!

Church was beautiful. Bright and inspirational. Be sure to see the painted stations of the cross in the entry foyer and "santus santus" bell on the floor on the left side of the altar. The largest and most unique bell of this type that I have ever seen.

We really enjoyed our wine tasting at Dr. Loosen. I highly recommend making an appointment for this informative, fun tasting. The wines were great and the tasting room provided a nice private setting for our party.

Not much to see - a nice chapel in the back but very hard to navigate as the site is still used as an elder care facility so we were unsure where we could go and where we couldn't. Okay if you're in the area.

I would rank this as my third favorite thing to do in Bernkastel, only behind renting a bike to tour the towns along the river and visiting the Vinothek. This is a relatively easy 7,5 km walk through beautiful forest with a few hundred meters elevation gain. The views over the valley are spectacular. Some walkers brought their food and wine with them we noticed. For us it was just the right cure for one of the greatest activities here it seems, which is eating. If done in the morning, you may arrive at the castle for a snack or lunch on your way back down. Easy to follow signs keep you on the path.
