Amherstburg, on the Detroit River, was a very pretty town with a beautiful waterfront; Gardens, Kings Navy Yard Park, Fort Malden and lots of lovely homes. We had a nice lunch at The Dalhousie Bistro, a really cute little house, on the main street. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Canada and the United States share the oldest peaceful international bordertoday and Fort Malden is a small peaceful park in Amherstburg. It wasn't always that way. In various wars and raids, the fort was too strong a base to be captured. It played a pivotal role in the history of Canada as a base to launch attacks into the Northwest Territories of the United States ( today's states of Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana) or in turn to defend against attacks from there. Tecumseh hung out here, and surviving captives from the battles of the River Raisin in 1813 were marched here. Supply lines through the Great lakes to the fort were cut with US Admiral Perry's victory over the British fleet on Lake Erie which helped to put an end to the war. Long after the War of !812 troops from the fort quashed a rebellion against the government. It remained an active base until after the establishment of the Federation of Canada. It's hard to imagine all the past violence as you look at the cannon and the grass covered earthworks (signs warn you to stay off) or gaze out at frieghters chugging along the Detroit River channel. The history and geography of the entire region would be quite different without this place. Paved paths are accessible as is the first floor of the museum which also has restrooms.

You are always welcome and usually by Sister an amazingly friendly orange cat. Maureen is a welcoming and generous hostess with their excellent red and white wines. The baco is great and they have excellent Berkshire pork sausages, Turkey kielbasa and sausages, beef burgers and more as well as fresh vegetables and other goodies. Well worth a stop if you are in the area.

Do not miss this historical site and its contents when you are in or visit Amherstburg. I was fortunate to have Rebekah as a tour guide. She is not just a wonderful person that will give you a lasting impression, she also possesses the knowledge of the history of the museum and it's contents. I had a great time and education and will surely be back.

The Park House has been a historical fixture in Amherstburg for generations. It was moved to it's present park like setting from another location in town. Excellent addition to the tourism for this very historic town. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the many items on display are most interesting. Check out the large antique reproduction wooden Noah's Ark up on the second floor that is based on early Sabbath Day toys. This one was made by me and donated to the museum with pleasure.

Well in all honesty I had forgotten the blockhouse was on the island . So it was a wonderful surprise to bike up to it and the lighthouse. The blockhouse is being restored and looks in great shape, the lighthouse has lost its top but looks beautiful anyway.

Hit this place over the holidays to try out the new local brewery in town!!
While its location is not ideal (not in a town center) it is a very busy travel route in the county so traffic volume will make this place a success.
This is a family owned business from what i understand and i think their success has been surprising to themselves. With that the establishment is rustic, inviting and the brews very solid. With any new business however there will be changes and improvements and i think this business will not only survive but will thrive!!!
When I'm back the area I will certainly be back and recommend everyone else do the same.

Built around 1816 after the War of 1812 by Robert Reynolds, the Deputy Assistant Commissary General at Fort Malden, and home of his sisters, Margaret and Catherine Reynolds whose landscape paintings provide an invaluable record of early 19th century life in Upper Canada. Designated a NHS in 1959, it is one of two buildings in Canada designated for its Palladian style architecture. Drive by only.
This home played a major role in the history of Amherstburg. Currently plans are underway to restore it so people can tour the home and grounds. It will take a large amount of money and work but will be well worth it when completed.
If you're in our little town, be sure to stop by and take a look.
