Le Petit Train Cyparis Express

Reviewed By brymel99 - Wellesley, Massachusetts

I can't review the actual excursion, because despite our best efforts were were unable to go. We arrived in St Pierre on a rainy day trying to figure out what to do, and learned at about 10:45 am that the single train ride of the day was leaving at 11 am. Though we typically tend away from "tours", with 3 young boys, we figured this would be as good a way as any to spend an hour or two - seeing some sights without getting wet. We rushed to the train, getting there right at 11, and were told that the ride would be canceled if there were not at least 10 paying adults. Well, we were the only ones on the train - 2 adults and 3 children. We waited a few minutes, and when no-one came, the driver said he was canceling the trip. We offered (in French) to pay extra to make up for the lack of other passengers, but he refused. We asked about taking an abbreviated tour, but he refused. We asked whether he might offer the ride again later in the day, but he said no. So, we got off the train and left. No idea whether it would have been good or bad. Giving it 2 stars because the train itself (where we waited for 10 minutes) is comfortable, with well-padded seats, and it's roofed in with open-air sides which would make it comfortable rain or shine. But don't get your hopes up about going unless you have at least 10 adults with you - or you're sure there are enough other passengers to get there.

Distillerie Depaz

We had an interesting visit to this beautiful, attractive and well maintained site. We paid EUR5 to visit the house, which we enjoyed and provided the context for the estate, and walked around the distillery buildings which are well signed and explained, (both historic items and currently used equipment. Finally, a rum tasting, which was good fun. When we arrived the tasting area and shop was busy with a coach party but once they had left everywhere was relatively quiet and unhurried. We had coffee in the restaurant, a pleasant spot.

Volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis-- all this and more about natural disasters and phenomena. Very well laid out with indoor and outdoor exhibits, models, a hands-on kids' space and a fantastic documentary about Carribean volcanoes. Note: This earth-sciences Centre is situated and the north end of Saint-Pierre at the foot of Mount Pelée (yes, the volcano that erupted in 1906) and may not be marked on all maps.

Eglise du Mouillage

Reviewed By SteveJacksonnufc - Gateshead, England

This place is known as the Co Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption and is the main church in the town of Saint Pierre. It has been the location of a church for many years, going back to the seventeenth century with this church now having been built in the late nineteenth century and restored in the 1920's following damage caused by the 1902 volcanic eruption. The church is a little run down and we were unable to go inside, but the two towers at the front are very attractive and the place stands proud on the mountainside overlooking Saint Pierre. It' a really nice building and some fine Baroque style architecture along with a few other styles evident.

Having read and studied The Day the World Ended, I was impressed with the knowledge of the guide, Elisa. She answered nontrvial question and spoke passable English. The artifacts are invaluable and irreplaceable. The display photos are precious. I wish the museum sold post card versions of the display photos.
